This position performs a broad range of skilled maintenance, construction, and operational duties in support of the City's public infrastructure, including water distribution, wastewater collection, streets, parks, rights-of-way, sanitation, and municipal facilities. The Maintenance Worker operates and maintains a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment, tools, and utility systems while ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of essential public services. The position is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and installing municipal infrastructure; monitoring utility system operations; performing preventative maintenance on City equipment; responding to emergencies and on-call situations; and assisting with seasonal operations such as snow removal and grounds maintenance. The Maintenance Worker works collaboratively with City staff, contractors, utility customers, and the public to maintain the City's infrastructure, protect public health and safety, and provide responsive, high-quality municipal services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned. Maintain, repair, install, and inspect the City's water distribution, wastewater collection, stormwater, and related utility systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Operate, monitor, inspect, and maintain water wells, lift stations, pumps, valves, hydrants, and other utility infrastructure by recording operational data, checking well levels, monitoring pumping activity, maintaining chlorine levels, and identifying operational issues. Collect water and wastewater samples, perform chlorine residual testing, maintain operational records, and assist in ensuring compliance with Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) regulations and other applicable standards. Operate a variety of light- and heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized machinery, including dump trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, street sweepers, mowers, and other equipment necessary to support Public Works operations. Construct, repair, and maintain City streets, alleys, rights-of-way, sidewalks, drainage systems, and other public infrastructure through patching, grading, excavation, and related maintenance activities. Maintain City parks, public buildings, rights-of-way, and other municipal properties by mowing, trimming, weed control, tree maintenance, litter removal, and general grounds maintenance. Perform routine preventive maintenance, inspections, minor repairs, servicing, lubrication, and cleaning of City vehicles, equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure safe and reliable operation. Provide sanitation and solid waste services by operating collection vehicles, supporting refuse operations, and maintaining sanitation equipment and related facilities. Respond to emergencies, utility outages, severe weather events, water leaks, sewer backups, snow and ice removal, fallen trees, and other Public Works emergencies, including participating in the City's on-call rotation. Read water meters, complete work orders, maintain operational logs, prepare inspection and maintenance records, and accurately document work performed, equipment usage, and regulatory information. Communicate effectively with residents, contractors, utility customers, coworkers, and other City departments regarding service requests, maintenance activities, and operational issues while providing courteous customer service. Maintain regular and reliable attendance, including reporting to work as scheduled, participating in the on-call rotation, and working overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response assignments as required. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED. One (1) to three (3) years of experience in public works, water or wastewater utilities, construction, equipment operation, street maintenance, grounds maintenance, or a closely related field. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must successfully pass a background check and pre-employment screening. Valid Kansas Driver's License. Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, or the ability to obtain within ninety (90) days of employment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) or more years of progressively responsible experience in municipal public works or utility operations. Experience operating light- and heavy-duty construction equipment and maintaining municipal water and wastewater systems. KDHE Class II Water Operator Certification. Bilingual in English and Spanish, including the ability to communicate effectively with customers in both languages.

REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, construction, and repair of municipal water distribution, wastewater collection, stormwater, street, park, and public works infrastructure. Knowledge of the safe operation, inspection, maintenance, and minor repair of light- and heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, power tools, and specialized public works equipment. Skill in reading and interpreting work orders, equipment manuals, maps, utility locates, operating instructions, safety procedures, and technical documents. Capacity to identify operational problems, evaluate conditions, exercise sound judgment, and respond safely, efficiently, and effectively to routine maintenance activities and emergency situations. Capacity to perform mathematical calculations, maintain accurate operational records, complete required reports, and document inspections, testing results, and maintenance activities. Capacity to work independently with limited supervision while following established procedures, prioritizing assignments, and recognizing when guidance or assistance is needed. Capacity to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, contractors, utility customers, and members of the public while providing courteous and responsive customer service.
