The Maintenance Technician / General Laborer is a hands-on, dual-duty position responsible for maintaining and repairing the equipment used by C & K Box and Mulch Wholesalers. The primary focus is preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of sawmill machinery, forklifts, loaders, and the Woodpecker automatic nailing machine. When maintenance work is not required, this employee supports production, material handling, cleanup, and other general labor needs. The position requires dependable attendance, sound mechanical judgment, careful timekeeping, and a willingness to assist wherever needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Equipment Maintenance & Repair:

Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair sawmill machinery and related production equipment. Maintain and repair forklifts, loaders, and other material-handling equipment within the employee's training and qualifications. Maintain, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair the Woodpecker automatic nailing machine. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical problems and complete appropriate repairs. Perform lubrication, adjustments, parts replacement, routine servicing, and other preventive maintenance tasks. Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and work to minimize production downtime. Coordinate outside service or specialized repairs with management when work is beyond the employee's qualifications or available resources.

Preventive Maintenance & Documentation:

Develop, follow, and update preventive maintenance schedules for company equipment. Complete and maintain accurate inspection, service, repair, and parts records. Identify worn, damaged, or unsafe components before they cause equipment failure or create a safety hazard. Communicate equipment condition, repair status, parts needs, and recommended improvements to management. Help maintain an organized inventory of common replacement parts, lubricants, and maintenance supplies. Keep company-provided tools and the maintenance work area clean, organized, and in serviceable condition.

General Labor & Production Support:

Assist with pallet, sawmill, mulch, and other production operations when maintenance work is not required. Load, unload, move, stack, sort, and organize products, materials, and supplies. Support production employees and help keep work flowing safely and efficiently. Perform general facility, yard, shop, equipment, and production-area cleanup. Operate machinery or material-handling equipment only when properly trained and authorized. Complete other maintenance, production, or general labor duties assigned by management.

Safety & Work Practices:

Follow all company safety policies, equipment-guarding requirements, and lockout/tagout procedures. Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe footwear as directed. Never bypass or disable a machine guard, interlock, or safety device without authorization and approved safety controls. Immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, equipment damage, and potential hazards. Maintain clean work areas and use tools, lifting methods, and repair procedures safely.

Dual-Rate Timekeeping & Communication:

Clock into the maintenance job code at $25.00 per hour while performing authorized maintenance work. Clock into the general labor job code at $18.00 per hour while performing production or other general labor work. Change job codes whenever the assigned work changes and promptly report any timekeeping error to management. Provide management with regular updates on equipment status, completed repairs, outstanding issues, and work priorities. Accurately report all time worked; working off the clock is prohibited.

Compensation & Benefits:

$25.00 per hour for authorized maintenance duties. $18.00 per hour for general labor and production duties. Overtime, when applicable, will be calculated and paid in accordance with federal and Michigan law. Medical, dental, and vision insurance available after 90 days, with the company paying 70% and the employee paying 30% of the premium. 401(k) retirement plan available after the applicable eligibility period, with company matching up to 4%. The company provides the tools required for the position.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Previous industrial, manufacturing, automotive, heavy-equipment, or mechanical maintenance experience is required. Strong mechanical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and repair skills. Experience with sawmill equipment, forklifts, loaders, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, conveyors, or automated machinery is preferred. Basic electrical troubleshooting, welding, or fabrication experience is preferred. Maintenance-related licenses or certifications are a plus but are not required. Ability to work independently, prioritize repairs, and respond appropriately to urgent equipment needs. Dependable attendance, accountability, and willingness to perform general labor when maintenance work is not available. Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions, written procedures, equipment manuals, and safety requirements. Valid government-issued identification is required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work on concrete surfaces for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and request assistance for heavier or awkward items. Ability to use hand tools and power tools and work around industrial machinery. Frequent exposure to loud noise, wood dust, mulch, moving equipment, temperature changes, and outdoor elements. Ability to safely perform work from approved ladders or elevated work areas when trained and authorized.

Work Schedule:

Full-time:

Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Occasional Fridays:

6:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Additional hours may be required for urgent repairs, equipment breakdowns, or operational needs.
