Custodian/Maintenance Worker Evangel Church - 4.6 Scotch Plains, NJ Job Details Part-time $18 - $20 an hour 20 hours ago Qualifications Burglar alarm systems Security system Groundskeeping Property maintenance Attention to detail Stocking Full Job Description Weekend Job Summary We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and service-minded Facilities Custodian / Maintenance Worker to join our Facilities Team for our weekend PT position. (Saturday 7AM to 3pm & Sunday 5:30am to 1:30PM ) This position plays an important role in maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming environment for our church staff, congregation, ministries, guests, and community. The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in their work, notices details, works well independently and with a team, and is willing to assist with both custodial responsibilities and general facility needs. This is a hands-on position that includes cleaning, event setup and teardown, basic building maintenance, room preparation, building opening and closing procedures, and supporting the daily operations of the church facility. Duties and Responsibilities Perform daily cleaning and custodial duties throughout the building, including restrooms, offices, classrooms, common areas, hallways, and ministry spaces. Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, sanitize surfaces, remove trash, and restock restroom and cleaning supplies. Clean and maintain floors using appropriate equipment, including vacuums, floor machines, buffers, and other commercial cleaning equipment. Prepare rooms and spaces for church services, meetings, conferences, ministry events, and special events. Set up and break down tables, chairs, equipment, and other event-related items. Ensure rooms are properly arranged, clean, and ready before scheduled events. Be responsible for opening the building when scheduled, including properly disarming the alarm system and ensuring the facility is ready and safe for staff, ministries, and guests. When responsible for closing the building, complete all required closing procedures, including checking rooms and common areas, securing doors and entrances, confirming that the building is clear and safe, and properly setting the alarm system before leaving. Assist with minor facility repairs and general maintenance such as painting, replacing fixtures, basic plumbing tasks, furniture repairs, and other light maintenance work. Identify building or equipment issues and report them promptly to the Facilities Manager. Assist with monitoring building conditions and ensuring facility systems are operating properly. Support contractors and vendors when work is being completed throughout the facility as directed by the Facilities Manager. Maintain clean and organized storage rooms, maintenance areas, custodial closets, and equipment. Safely use cleaning chemicals and follow all safety procedures and manufacturer instructions. Assist with snow, weather-related cleanup, exterior cleaning, and grounds-related needs when necessary. Respond quickly and professionally to facility needs that may arise during services, events, or normal operating hours. Follow established cleaning schedules, facility standards, safety procedures, and instructions from Facilities leadership. Help ensure that all areas of the church remain safe, clean, welcoming, and ready for ministry. Qualifications Previous custodial, janitorial, maintenance, facilities, or commercial cleaning experience preferred. Experience using commercial cleaning equipment is preferred. Basic knowledge of general building maintenance and repairs is a plus. Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and equipment. Ability to lift, carry, move, and set up tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies. Ability to perform physical work including standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and climbing stairs throughout the shift. Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize problems before they become larger issues. Dependable, punctual, and able to follow through on assigned responsibilities. Ability to work independently while also functioning well as part of a Facilities Team. Strong communication skills and a respectful, professional attitude when interacting with staff, church members, ministries, vendors, and guests. Willingness to assist wherever needed and adapt to changing facility or event needs. Must be trustworthy and responsible when handling building access, keys, alarm systems, and opening and closing procedures. Availability to work some Sundays, evenings, weekends, or special events may be required.
