Job Description
Job Summary The Sexton is a vital member of the parish staff, responsible for the care, maintenance, and security of the church's buildings and grounds. The Sexton works in collaboration with the Property Committee, staff, and ministry leaders to ensure that the church is clean, welcoming, and well-maintained for all who enter. The Sexton is supervised by the Parish Administrator and is ultimately responsible to the Rector.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilities Maintenance & Custodial Care- Clean and maintain all areas of the church: sanctuary, parish hall, offices, sacristy, classrooms, restrooms, kitchen, and common areas (including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, washing windows).
- Remove trash from all interior and exterior receptacles.
- Keep restrooms and kitchen stocked with paper products and hand soap.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, patching walls).
- Maintain a 30-day supply of paper products, cleaning supplies, and regularly used maintenance supplies, communicating ordering needs to Parish Administrator.
- Monitor building systems and communicate issues to the Parish Administrator, Property Committee, or Rector as appropriate.
- See that all safety equipment including security cameras, smoke detectors, fire alarms, AEDs, fire extinguishers, and emergency lights are functioning properly and are inspected as required. Maintain a log of inspection dates.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors as needed.
- Receive and put away deliveries as needed.
- Attend monthly Staff meetings.
- Attend monthly Property Committee meetings. Grounds & Seasonal Responsibilities
- Keep all church entrances and sidewalks clear of litter and debris.
- Shovel snow, salt walkways, and ensure safe access during winter months or inclement weather.
- Keep outdoor spaces clean, welcoming, and safe.
- Clean light fixtures as needed.
- Assist in setting up, taking down, and putting away seasonal decorations. Worship & Event Support
- Set up and break down for parish events, receptions, classes, and community functions.
- Serve as a liaison for outside groups as needed and for additional compensation.
- Inspect the parking lot and entrances before Sunday worship to ensure they are clean, accessible, and safe; make sure the church, bathrooms, and common areas are ready for visitors. Turn on lights and adjust thermostats as needed.
- Ensure that all tables and chairs are put away after Sunday coffee hour, bathrooms and common areas are clean, and all doors and windows are secured and locked.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in custodial, maintenance, or facilities work
- Basic carpentry, electric, and plumbing skills
- Familiarity with HVAC systems (preferred)
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks including climbing stairs and ladders
- Reliable, self-motivated, and organized
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and guests
- Respect for the liturgical and communal life of an Episcopal congregation
- Bilingual (preferred)
HOURS AND COMPENSATION
- This is a half-time position to start, with the possibility of additional hours depending on skills, interests, and availability.
- Sunday split-shift required. Other hours are flexible are generally flexible with some evenings or Saturdays as needed.
