Job:
The General Mechanic performs mechanical repair on a variety of power equipment and related work including maintenance, modification, acquisition and circulation of tools and equipment. Work involves the servicing of equipment in a preventative maintenance program, the inspection of inoperable equipment to locate defects and the repair or overhaul of gas engines and the mechanical components of equipment powered by the engines. A large part of the duties will be working on large concrete saws. This classification is represented by DCTU. The Current vacancies are within the Portland Bureau of Transportation however the Portland Water Bureau and Parks and Recreation may also utilize this list
Portland Bureau of Transportation:
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) plans, builds, manages and maintains an effective and safe transportation system that provides people and businesses access and mobility. We keep Portland moving. PBOT general mechanics manage and maintain the City's equipment and tools used in the operational maintenance of thousands of miles of street, sidewalks, traffic signs and markings, structures and sewers. Typical equipment maintained consist of but not all inclusive:? Gas power units and tools, hydraulics, cordless and pneumatic power tools, snow and de-icing equipment. PBOT maintenance mechanics are essential employees and must report during emergency conditions.
Portland Parks and Recreation:
General mechanics in the park bureau work on small engine equipment for example string trimmers, chainsaws, backpack blowers and generators. They also work on small and large diesel engines. A lot of mechanic time is devoted to working on our diesel mowers that have complex hydraulic systems. Mechanics sharpen shears, chainsaws and mower blades.
The Water Bureau:
General Mechanics for the Water Bureau perform work on our live water system therefore a level 1 Water Distribution Certification shall be required within 2 years of appointment.
Please note:
The Water Distribution Certification requires at a minimum GED or high school diploma. To Qualify Applicants must meet each of the following qualifications per
HRAR 7.01
: Hold regular status in this classification Passed probationary period Or Hold limited duration status in this classification The following minimum qualifications are required for this position: Experience in the safe operation of equipment, applying safety standards, and promoting a safe workplace. Experience in diagnosing, testing, maintaining, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, diesel and/or gas powered equipment and tools Experienc e in creating and/or maintaining a computerized preventative maintenance programs and managing equipment inventory such as: researching new equipment and/or replacement parts, technical specifications and service requirements. Experience providing technical assistance, instruction, and training on the operation and safe use of tools. to work effectively with co-workers in a diverse workforce Ability? to work effectively with co-workers in a diverse workforce Applicant must also possess: Valid State Driver's License Portland Bureau of Transportation (ONLY) requires a CDL Class A within 6 months of hire The Portland Water Bureau (ONLY) requires a Water Distribution Certification within 2 years of appointment.
Please note:
A high school diploma or GED is required to obtain this certification.
