9/3/2026 SUMMARY The General Maintenance Worker reports to the Manager Facilities Planning and Operations Management. Under general supervision and within Brown University Health policies and procedures, performs routine repair and maintenance functions at Brown University Health outreach sites. RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives work orders for a wide range of repair/maintenance requests at various Brown University Health Affiliate off-site locations.
May perform:
Rebuilding/repairing furniture, walls, windows and frames, medical exhibits Installation and replacement of countertops, floor and ceiling tiles, fixtures, dry wall, handrails, locks, hardware, ceramic tile, wall hangings, and similar projects Installation, repair, and adjustment of keyboard trays Removal and replacement of HIPAA bins Work performed may include: Plastering, painting, staining, varnishing, hanging wallpaper, applying sealant, decorating and protecting interior surfaces, woodwork, trimmings, furniture, and equipment Moving and relocating office furniture and equipment Resolves minor plumbing and electrical problems that do not require a licensed tradesperson.
These activities may include:
Installing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, eye wash stations, emergency showers, and related equipment Installing/replacing bulbs, installing/replacing batteries in emergency lighting fixtures, checking breakers, plugs, and switches for appropriate operation Performing initial evaluation of the problem to determine if the project is more complex and requires an electrical or plumbing contractor to complete the repair Completes inspections of fire extinguishers and emergency lights. Completes grounds work as directed, which may include: Picking up trash Sweeping curb and dumpster areas Maintaining landscaping beds and other areas Assists with snow and ice removal at all off-site locations using equipment provided by Brown University Health. Communicates with customers about the time schedule to complete the work request. Completes basic records, such as work orders, requisitions, and vehicle inspection sheets. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE
High School Graduate or equivalent GED with vocational courses in HVAC or other building trade Certification in construction or building specialty is preferred Knowledge of all phases of maintenance and repair trades is essential
EXPERIENCE
Minimum two to three years experience in a journeyman level of a skilled labor position Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor field environments; travel from site to site; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weight; operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information Exposed to hazards related to using hand/power tools, chemicals, climbing ladders; hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, dependable vehicle, proof of insurance, and a good driving record
