Job Description
Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 reserves the right to select candidates considered to be the most highly qualified based on education and/or experience.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs routine (entry-level) drainage maintenance and construction work. Work involves maintaining Drainage District facilities, and stationary equipment, operating motorized equipment; works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Performs maintenance and construction duties at District facilities. Maintains drainage facilities mowing grass along guard rails, drain ditches and picking up trash. Upkeep of District yard. May assist in installing drainpipes at District facilities and/or projects. Operates chainsaw, lawn mower and other hand tools. Loads/Unloads materials, trash, brush, etc. onto truck/trailer to dispose of properly. Maintains records on work orders or projects. May assist with the maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, systems, or components. May operate and repair minor equipment. May perform inspections of operating machinery, equipment, and systems. May be assigned to monitor District equipment at pump locations throughout the County as needed. Working hours subject to change as deemed necessary to the District's needs. Regular attendance is a must. Assists in cleaning equipment, hand tools and assigned equipment/unit. Pulls weeds, maintain district facilities as required. Assists in duties such as fence building, repair and painting. May maintain a workshop for the repair, alteration, refinishing and construction of furniture, fixtures and equipment.EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED), preferred. One to two (1-2) years of experience in drainage ditch construction, maintenance, and repair work preferred.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license Must be able to be insured by the District's insurance carrier Positions requiring a CDL or positions of safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations. Positions requiring a CDL are subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse requirements, including queries for alcohol and drug violations. Applicants must be registered with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and will be required to provide consent for the County to perform a pre-employment query. Failure to comply with FMCSA Clearinghouse procedures may affect this application process.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and construction of drainage ditches. Ability to operate weed-eater, lawn mower, shovel, ax, hole-digger, rake and other equipment. Skill in the use of tools and equipment. Must be able to swim. Ability to perform maintenance; to follow instructions; to work from drawings, diagrams, construction plans or sketches. Must have basic knowledge of hand tools associated with manual labor and the minor repair of the equipment. Ability to operate a jackhammer, pole-hole digger, hole-auger, etc., all employees will be trained on the job to handle such tools. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, maintenance instructions and procedure manual. Bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages, preferred. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure. Ability to solve simple and common-sense problems and interpret simple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to understand, follow and give oral and written instructions. Ability to use basic computer technology to access the employee portal and operate District-issued electronic devices. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other crew members. Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather. May be assigned other duties in addition to those listed. Duties may change according to the changing needs of the District.PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Employee will be subject to work in inclement weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
