Richmond, VA Job Description The Seasonal Maintenance Assistant performs routine maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of Garden facilities, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure. This role provides hands-on support to the Facilities team and helps maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, and visitors. This is a temporary position working during the Dominion GardenFest of Lights Exhibit from September through January. Responsibilities Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs to buildings, fixtures, furniture, and equipment. Assist with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance. Inspect facilities and report maintenance, safety, or repair needs to the supervisor. Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections of tools and equipment. Set up, move, and break down furniture, equipment, and materials for events and Garden operations. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas. Assist with grounds and exterior maintenance as needed, including litter removal and seasonal tasks. Respond to maintenance requests and complete assigned work in a timely manner. Operate hand and power tools safely and appropriately. Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment. Assist skilled maintenance staff and contractors with larger projects as directed. Perform other duties as assigned. Skills and Abilities Ability to fix fixtures, clear drains, patch drywall, and replace faulty switches or outlets. Working knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, masonry, and painting. Familiarity and proficiency with the safe operation of power tools, hand tools, and testing devices (e.g., multimeters, pressure gauges). Understanding of OSHA guidelines, local building codes, and safe chemical/hazardous material handling. Skill in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and structural issues and determining proper fixes. Dependable and responsible work habits. Willingness to learn new maintenance skills and procedures. Good communication and customer-service skills. Ability to prioritize tasks and respond appropriately to changing needs. Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and professional environment. Must ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Must perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Physical Demands / Working Conditions Must be able to move throughout the 82-acre Garden property, as needed. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods. Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work to support Garden events and operations. Work may involve exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, machinery, and other typical maintenance conditions.
