Job Description

Position Overview Sheboygan Water Utility is seeking a dependable and skilled Construction-Maintenance Worker/Distribution Technician to join our team. This hands-on position plays a critical role in the maintenance and repair of our drinking water distribution system and other essential utility infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, capable of responding to emergency situations after hours, and experienced with construction, maintenance, and mechanical systems within both distribution and treatment plant environments. Key Responsibilities Under general supervision, the Construction-Maintenance Worker/Distribution Technician performs a variety of skilled tasks related to: Water Distribution System Maintenance Install, repair, and maintain water mains, services, valves, hydrants, meters, and storage tanks. Operate heavy construction equipment including backhoes, skid steers, excavators, loaders, and trucks. Use leak detection tools and other diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and locate distribution system issues. Perform pavement, curb, and site restoration following excavations. Emergency Response & Standby Respond to after-hours emergencies including water main breaks, leaks, and other urgent utility needs. Participate in standby duty rotation once deemed ready by the Distribution Supervisor. General Maintenance & Utility Support Perform snow removal, landscaping, and site maintenance. Locate underground facilities in accordance with utility marking standards. Load and unload materials and supplies; maintain accurate inventory records. Use mobile devices and computers to enter data and track work activities. Water Treatment Plant & Building Work Assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of pumping and treatment systems. Perform basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical/mechanical tasks. Maintain and repair water treatment equipment, heating systems, motors, and related infrastructure. Conduct confined space entry and assist in facility inspections and surveys. Work Environment This position requires regular outdoor work in varying and extreme weather conditions. Employees may encounter physically demanding tasks, confined spaces, and occasionally hazardous situations. Safety is a top priority. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within 1 year of hire. Must participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program per CDL requirements. Experience with utility maintenance, or heavy equipment operation is highly desirable. Ability to follow safety protocols, communicate effectively, and work independently or as part of a team.
Wage Rate:
Starting base wage is $31.21. Longevity is applied to the base wage rate for final pay rate; this position qualifies for base wage steps of 2% at 6 and 18 months subject to approval. The Water Utility offers a strong health insurance package along with participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System along with other benefits including a stable work environment.
