Fleet Maintenance Manager
Job Description
Job summary Groome Transportation is seeking a Fleet Maintenance Manager to lead and oversee fleet maintenance operations and ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of company vehicles. This position is responsible for managing maintenance personnel, coordinating preventative maintenance programs, overseeing repairs, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting overall fleet readiness. The Fleet Maintenance Manager works closely with Operations, Safety, and Fleet leadership to ensure vehicles are maintained to manufacturer specifications, maintenance records are accurately documented, and operational downtime is minimized. This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership experience, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence. Pay
•$90,000 - $100,000 a year Essential Duties and Responsibilities Fleet Maintenance Operations Oversee maintenance operations for a diverse fleet of passenger buses, vans, and support vehicles to ensure compliance with OEM maintenance standards. Schedule, prioritize, and coordinate preventative maintenance and repair activities. Delegate work assignments effectively to maximize productivity and fleet availability. Monitor fleet utilization and equipment readiness to support operational requirements. Perform maintenance and repair duties as necessary to support shop operations. Fleet Management Systems and Reporting Utilize fleet management software, including Fleetio, to manage repairs, work orders, preventative maintenance schedules, and asset records. Maintain and monitor the Out of Service list to ensure timely return of vehicles to operational status. Generate and review maintenance reports, operational metrics, and fleet performance data. Provide maintenance updates, fleet status reports, and operational summaries to leadership. Leadership and Team Development Provide leadership, direction, and support to mechanics and maintenance personnel. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Schedule and coordinate staffing to meet operational demands. Train, coach, and develop maintenance team members. Establish performance expectations and support employee development initiatives. Technical Maintenance and Diagnostics Utilize diagnostic software and equipment to identify and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues. Maintain proficiency with diagnostic tools, including Cummins Insite, Ford IDS, and OBD-II systems. Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, brake, suspension, HVAC, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and exhaust systems. Operate shop equipment including hydraulic lifts, floor jacks, tire equipment, and specialized maintenance tools. Monitor vehicle performance, fuel economy, and maintenance trends to identify potential issues. Safety and Regulatory Compliance Enforce maintenance safety protocols and shop safety standards. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and environmental requirements. Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) and ensure identified defects are repaired, documented, and properly closed out. Maintain accurate maintenance records and regulatory documentation. Operational Support Work closely with the Vice President of Fleet Services and operational leadership to support business objectives and fleet performance initiatives. Collaborate with Operations, Safety, Dispatch, and Human Resources to ensure effective communication and coordination. Respond to emergency maintenance situations and provide on-call support as needed. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned. Duties and responsibilities may change at any time based on operational needs. Qualifications and Education Requirements Valid CDL Class B driver's license with Passenger endorsement required. Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in a fleet maintenance or transportation environment. Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a mechanic or lead mechanic in the transportation maintenance field. Master ASE Certification, equivalent technical certification, or completion of an accredited trade school program required. Strong knowledge of bus and commercial vehicle maintenance, repair procedures, and diagnostic systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email, and internet-based systems. Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) qualifications applicable to the position, including successful completion of a DOT physical examination, road test, and any employment requirements permitted by law. Conditional offers of employment are subject to successful completion of drug testing, background and motor vehicle record checks, and physical agilities testing. Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Must successfully complete the company's Driver Safety Training Program. Preferred Skills Strong leadership and personnel management skills. Excellent organizational, planning, and communication abilities. Extensive knowledge of diesel engine systems and heavy-duty vehicle maintenance. Working knowledge of HVAC, air, hydraulic, suspension, transmission, brake, electrical, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems. Knowledge of DPF, DOC, DEF, SCR, regeneration systems, and turbocharger technologies. Understanding of heavy-duty suspension systems, including wheel seals, king pins, airbags, shocks, and brake components. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and shop conditions. Ability to perform hands-on mechanical work as required. Work Environment Combination of maintenance shop, fleet yard, and office environments. Frequent exposure to moving vehicles, shop equipment, chemicals, fuels, and maintenance materials. May require work outside normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations. Participation in an on-call rotation may be required. Reporting Structure Reports directly to the Vice President of Fleet Services or other designated company leadership. Provides direction and oversight to maintenance personnel and shop operations.
