Job summary Groome Transportation is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic to support fleet maintenance operations and ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of company vehicles. This position performs advanced diagnostic, repair, and preventative maintenance activities on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles while maintaining compliance with company standards, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements. The mechanic serves as a skilled maintenance professional capable of independently diagnosing vehicle issues, performing complex repairs, and supporting fleet readiness across Groome Transportation operations. Pay $35 - $40 an hour Essential Duties and Responsibilities Fleet Maintenance and Repair Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on company vehicles. Maintain equipment in accordance with OEM standards and company maintenance requirements. Troubleshoot and repair engine, brake, transmission, electrical, HVAC, suspension, fuel, hydraulic, air, and exhaust systems. Identify and report maintenance concerns to the Fleet Manager or Regional Fleet Manager. Ensure fleet vehicles are safe, reliable, and service-ready. Diagnostics and Technology Utilize Fleetio Maintenance Software to document repairs, work orders, parts usage, and maintenance activities. Utilize computer-based diagnostic tools to troubleshoot vehicle systems and engine failures. Operate and utilize Cummins Insite, Ford IDS, and OBD-II diagnostic systems. Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. Safety and Compliance Ensure repairs identified through Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) are completed and properly documented in Fleetio and Motive systems. Correct all safety-related issues prior to the vehicle returning to service. Complete required quarterly safety training and comply with all company safety requirements. Follow all federal, state, local, DOT, and company safety regulations. Operational Support Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to after-hours maintenance needs, roadside emergencies, and inclement weather events. Operate floor jacks, hydraulic lifts, power tools, and other maintenance equipment. Remove and install tires as required. Sign for and secure after-hours parts deliveries when needed. Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet/Shop Manager. Customer Service Provide professional and responsive service to internal and external customers. Support operational departments by minimizing vehicle downtime and maintaining fleet availability. Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement preferred. Ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days of employment when assigned to locations operating CDL-required vehicles. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the transportation maintenance field. ASE Certification, technical certification, or trade school training preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational software systems. Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) qualifications applicable to the position, including successful completion of a DOT physical examination, road test, and any employment requirements permitted by law. Conditional offers of employment are subject to successful completion of drug testing, background and motor vehicle record checks, and physical agilities testing. Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Must successfully complete the company's Driver Safety Training Program. Preferred Skills Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic capabilities. Working knowledge of HVAC, air, hydraulic, suspension, transmission, engine, brake, electrical, oil, and cooling systems. Knowledge of diesel emissions systems including DPF, DOC, DEF, SCR, regeneration systems, and turbo VGT actuators. Understanding of heavy-duty suspension systems, including wheel seals, king pins, airbags, rotors, and shock systems. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent customer service and communication abilities. Reporting Structure Reports directly to the Fleet (Shop) Manager. Works closely with fleet management, operations, dispatch, and drivers to support safe and reliable service.
