  • $35 DOE Position Summary The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the maintenance team and overseeing the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of facility systems, production machinery, and building equipment.
This position coordinates preventive and corrective maintenance, assigns and prioritizes work, provides technical guidance, and ensures repairs are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule. The supervisor serves as the primary point of contact for maintenance operations and works closely with production, operations, safety, vendors, and management to minimize downtime, resolve equipment issues, and support continuous improvement. This is a hands-on leadership position that may also perform complex troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and emergency maintenance when needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Supervision
  • Supervise, train, coach, and support maintenance technicians and other assigned personnel.
  • Assign daily work orders and establish priorities based on safety, production requirements, equipment condition, and operational urgency.
  • Monitor work quality, productivity, attendance, and compliance with company policies and maintenance procedures.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance during equipment troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and facility projects.
  • Conduct shift meetings and communicate equipment status, outstanding repairs, safety concerns, and operational priorities.
  • Coordinate maintenance coverage, schedules, overtime, emergency response, and on-call assignments as required.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, effective communication, and a service-oriented approach within the maintenance department. Maintenance Planning and Operations
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance for machinery, equipment, utilities, and building systems.
  • Inspect, operate, and test machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions and verify proper operation after repairs.
  • Review work orders, equipment history, blueprints, schematics, repair manuals, and parts catalogs to determine repair requirements.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and structural problems and determine the appropriate corrective action.
  • Oversee the dismantling, repair, rebuilding, alignment, adjustment, installation, and testing of machines, equipment, and components.
  • Ensure routine maintenance is completed, including inspecting drives, motors, belts, bearings, gears, filters, lubrication points, and fluid levels.
  • Coordinate planned shutdowns, equipment installations, upgrades, and facility improvement projects to minimize operational disruption.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance requests and equipment breakdowns; lead troubleshooting and root-cause investigations.
  • Identify recurring failures and recommend equipment modifications, process improvements, or replacement strategies.
  • Support the development and improvement of preventive-maintenance procedures, inspection checklists, and standard work instructions. Safety and Compliance
  • Enforce safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, proper PPE use, chemical-handling rules, and safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Conduct pre-job hazard assessments and ensure technicians understand the risks and controls associated with assigned work.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with applicable company policies, manufacturer specifications, building codes, and environmental and workplace-safety requirements.
  • Investigate maintenance-related incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions; implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, shops, parts-storage locations, and maintenance equipment.
  • Verify that employees and contractors are trained and authorized before performing specialized or hazardous work. Work Orders, Documentation, and Reporting
  • Manage maintenance requests and work orders through the company's maintenance tracking or computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Ensure labor hours, parts used, repair findings, equipment condition, and completed work are documented accurately.
  • Maintain records for preventive maintenance, inspections, equipment history, warranties, permits, and regulatory requirements.
  • Track and report equipment downtime, work-order backlog, maintenance costs, recurring failures, preventive-maintenance completion, and other key performance indicators.
  • Communicate maintenance status, risks, repair timelines, and resource needs to management and affected departments.
  • Assist with maintenance budgets, cost estimates, capital requests, and long-term repair or replacement planning. Parts, Tools, Vendors, and Contractors
  • Monitor parts and supply inventory and establish appropriate minimum and maximum stock levels for critical items.
  • Order parts, tools, supplies, and equipment from approved vendors while considering cost, quality, lead time, and operational need.
  • Ensure tools, testing devices, hoists, cranes, welding equipment, and other maintenance equipment are inspected, maintained, and stored properly.
  • Obtain quotes, coordinate vendor visits, and oversee contractors performing repairs, inspections, installations, or specialized services.
  • Verify that contractor work meets safety requirements, project specifications, quality standards, and agreed timelines. Hands-On Technical Support
  • Repair machinery, equipment, electrical or electronic components, wiring, piping, plumbing, and building structures using appropriate tools and testing devices.
  • Assemble, install, align, adjust, or replace mechanical, electrical, structural, HVAC, and plumbing components.
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other machine components.
  • Fabricate, grind, weld, cut, paint, or modify parts and structures when qualified and authorized.
  • Repair or maintain roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, plaster, drywall, and other building components as needed.
  • Operate cranes, hoists, lifting devices, power tools, drain-cleaning equipment, pipe cutters, saws, drills, pullers, welding equipment, and precision measuring or testing instruments. Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work effectively with employees, management, external vendors, contractors, customers, and the public. Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate, associate degree, or apprenticeship in industrial maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical systems, HVAC, or a related field preferred.
  • Several years of progressive experience in industrial, commercial, manufacturing, or facilities maintenance required.
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience planning preventive maintenance, managing work orders, and coordinating vendors or contractors preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant experience may be considered. Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver's license may be required based on worksite responsibilities.
  • Forklift, aerial-lift, lockout/tagout, OSHA, HVAC, electrical, welding, or other trade certifications are preferred or may be required depending on the facility. Physical Requirements
  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, twist, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl, climb, and work in awkward or confined positions.
  • Frequently use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, equipment, and controls.
  • Perform repetitive movements and remain physically active for extended periods.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and position tools, parts, and equipment; specific weight requirements should be established by the employer based on the worksite.
  • Safely work at heights and use ladders, lifts, hoists, or other access equipment as authorized.
  • Maintain the vision, hearing, coordination, and mobility necessary to inspect equipment, identify hazards, and perform maintenance work safely.
