This is a working lead role: you will turn wrenches daily while also running the preventive maintenance program, managing DOT compliance for the fleet, controlling parts and shop inventory, and coordinating repair priorities with operations so that crews are never held up by equipment. You are the final word on whether a vehicle is safe and road-ready. Responsibilities Fleet Maintenance & Repair Diagnose, repair, and maintain the SCS fleet including pickups, flatbeds, and heavy trucks (gas and diesel), truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs), and trailers Maintain and repair traffic control equipment: arrow boards, portable message boards, light towers, generators, and related powered equipment Serve as the hands-on mechanic for yard and production equipment across the operation, including the sealcoat plant and sealcoat equipment, deicer manufacturing equipment, salt auger, sandbag machine, skid steers, forklifts, and (occasionally) Crafco crackseal machines — this role covers everything in the yard that runs, pumps, or lifts, not just what drives on the road Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to manufacturer and company standards; keep PM current across all yards Prioritize repairs against the operations schedule; communicate equipment status and downtime clearly to supervisors and dispatch Collaboration & Problem Solving Work hand-in-hand with Traffic Control operations daily — repair priorities, equipment swaps, and readiness calls are made in constant coordination with supervisors and dispatch, not in isolation Interact with employee end users of vehicles and equipment often, typically multiple times per day: fielding breakdown calls, diagnosing issues over the phone or in the yard, and getting crews back up and running with minimal downtime Bring a problem-solver's mindset — troubleshoot creatively, improvise safe temporary fixes when the schedule demands it, and follow through on permanent repairs Coach operators and drivers on proper equipment use when repeat damage or misuse patterns emerge; escalate chronic issues to supervisors constructively DOT & Safety Compliance Own annual DOT inspections and maintain fleet compliance with FMCSA vehicle maintenance requirements Maintain complete, audit-ready maintenance records for every unit (work orders, inspections, defect corrections) Review driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs) and close out defects promptly Enforce out-of-service decisions when a unit is not safe to operate — no exceptions Fuel, Tracking & Administrative Management Oversee the fleet fuel program: monitor fuel card usage, track consumption by unit, flag anomalies (excessive idle, unexplained usage, mileage discrepancies), and support fuel cost reporting to leadership Maintain the accuracy of the company GPS tracking system: ensure every unit is correctly assigned, tracked, and labeled in the system; verify new units are added and retired units removed; troubleshoot or coordinate repair of GPS hardware issues Keep equipment and vehicle records current in company tracking spreadsheets and software (Excel-based fleet logs, PM schedules, cost-per-unit tracking) Complete work orders, inspection forms, and maintenance documentation accurately and on time — paperwork discipline is a core expectation of this role, not an afterthought Shop & Inventory Management Manage parts inventory, shop supplies, tools, and vendor relationships; source parts cost-effectively Track maintenance costs per unit and flag repeat offenders for repair-vs-replace decisions Keep the shop organized, safe, and compliant (fluids handling, waste disposal, fire safety) Support fleet lifecycle planning: provide condition assessments and replacement recommendations to leadership Multi-Yard Support Provide mechanical support across the Meridian, Nampa, and Idaho Falls locations (occasional travel; field service calls as needed) Train field staff on basic equipment care, DVIR quality, and damage reporting Experience Required 5+ years of experience as a diesel/fleet mechanic, including medium- and heavy-duty trucks Working knowledge of

vehicle maintenance and inspection requirements Ability to diagnose electrical, hydraulic, brake, and drivetrain systems; comfort with diagnostic software/scan tools Valid driver's license with clean driving record; ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check Own basic hand tools (specialty tools and diagnostic equipment provided) Ability to work independently, prioritize under pressure, and communicate equipment status to non-mechanics Proficiency with basic computer tools: Excel spreadsheets, email, and web-based fleet/GPS tracking platforms; demonstrated habit of accurate, timely recordkeeping Strong problem-solving instincts and the interpersonal skills to work with field crews, supervisors, and dispatch daily — this is a high-contact role, not a back-of-the-shop position Preferred ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications (T-series) or equivalent CDL Class A or B (or willingness to obtain) Certified DOT annual inspector (or ability to become certified) Experience with small engines, generators, hydraulics, and trailer-mounted equipment Experience maintaining construction and production equipment: skid steers, forklifts, augers, pumps, conveyors, and/or asphalt maintenance equipment (sealcoat, crackseal) Welding/fabrication capability Prior lead or shop foreman experience; experience managing parts inventory Experience administering GPS/telematics platforms (Samsara, Verizon Connect, GPS Trackit, or similar) and fuel card programs (WEX, Fuelman, or similar) Why This Role Matters Every SCS crew that rolls out in the morning depends on the fleet being ready.
