Director of Buildings and Grounds Position Type:
Full-Time Position Summary The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the overall maintenance, repair, cleanliness, safety, supervision, and appearance of all parish and school facilities and grounds. This position oversees and supervises maintenance and custodial staff, coordinates contractors and volunteers, and ensures that all campus buildings and property are properly maintained to support the mission and daily operations of the parish and school community. In addition to facilities management responsibilities, this role actively supports the daily operation of the school during school hours through student supervision duties, cafeteria monitoring, operational support, and maintaining a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for students, staff, families, parishioners, and visitors. The Director of Buildings and Grounds works collaboratively with parish and school leadership to prioritize projects, manage repairs and improvements, oversee operational needs, and ensure the smooth functioning of parish and school facilities and daily activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Management and Supervision Manage, coach, supervise, and evaluate maintenance and custodial staff. Assign daily, weekly, and seasonal work schedules and responsibilities. Promote a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment. Ensure staff follow proper safety procedures and diocesan/parish policies. Organize and coordinate volunteers assisting with maintenance or grounds projects. Support a culture of hospitality, professionalism, safety, and service throughout the parish and school campus. Facilities and Grounds Management Oversee the ongoing maintenance, care, cleanliness, safety, and appearance of all parish and school buildings and grounds, including: Church School Rectory Parish offices and additional campus facilities Ensure buildings and grounds remain clean, safe, operational, orderly, and well maintained. Perform regular inspections to identify maintenance needs, operational concerns, and safety issues. Coordinate preventive maintenance programs for building systems and equipment. Manage seasonal responsibilities including snow removal, landscaping, lawn care, and outdoor maintenance. Assist with event setup and breakdown, including tables, chairs, equipment, and room arrangements for school and parish functions. School Operations and Student Supervision Assist with maintaining a safe, orderly, and welcoming school environment during school hours. Supervise and monitor students during breakfast, lunch periods, recess transitions, arrival, dismissal, hallways, and other designated times as assigned. Support cafeteria operations by assisting with meal supervision, student safety, and maintaining orderly behavior expectations. Respond appropriately to student needs and communicate concerns to school administration when necessary. Help ensure common areas, cafeterias, hallways, entrances, and outdoor spaces remain clean, organized, and safe throughout the school day. Collaborate with school staff to support the smooth daily operation of the school environment. Repairs and Improvements Coordinate and oversee all repairs, maintenance projects, and facility improvements. Perform routine maintenance, custodial, and operational duties as needed on a daily basis. Troubleshoot maintenance issues and arrange for timely repairs. Seek quotes and estimates for projects, repairs, and contracted services. Review project proposals, costs, and recommendations with parish management and finance leadership. Coordinate and supervise outside vendors and contractors to ensure quality work and compliance with expectations. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain maintenance schedules, service records, and project documentation. Monitor inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment. Assist in preparing and managing maintenance and facilities budgets. Ensure compliance with diocesan policies, safety regulations, and applicable building codes. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of parish and school operations. Qualifications Experience in facilities management, building maintenance, custodial services, school operations, or related field preferred. Prior supervisory or team leadership experience required. Working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general repairs. Ability to supervise students in a positive, respectful, and consistent manner. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively to urgent operational or maintenance needs. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, contractors, parish leadership, and school personnel. Basic computer and administrative skills preferred. Valid driver's license required. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull maintenance equipment and supplies. Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and perform physical labor regularly. Ability to supervise students and remain active throughout the school day. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
