Position Summary

The Assistant Crew Chief/Crew Chief supports the maintenance, safety, and operational readiness of assigned aircraft. This position provides hands-on technical leadership, assists with coordinating maintenance personnel and activities, maintains accurate records, and ensures compliance with Billings Flying Service (BFS) procedures, approved technical data, and applicable Federal Aviation Regulations.

Billings Flying Service operates a fleet of 10 CH-47 aircraft and specializes in aerial firefighting, heavy-lift operations, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. With decades of fixed-wing and rotorcraft experience, BFS supports domestic and international operations through its experienced personnel and FAA-certificated Part 145 repair station.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Aircraft Maintenance and Airworthiness

• Perform and document maintenance and alterations on aircraft airframes, engines, and associated systems in accordance with the BFS Maintenance Procedures Manual (MPM), Approved Inspection Program (AIP), manufacturers' maintenance manuals, approved or acceptable technical data, and applicable 14 CFR requirements.
  
• Ensure assigned aircraft are maintained in accordance with applicable airworthiness standards and BFS policies and procedures.
  
• Identify, document, troubleshoot, and resolve aircraft discrepancies during major inspection events.
  
• Remove an aircraft from service when it is determined to be unairworthy and return it to service only when authorized and in accordance with BFS procedures and applicable regulations.
  
• Remove, identify, and segregate suspected unapproved parts or components to prevent installation on company aircraft.
  
• Provide after-hours and on-call maintenance support for assigned aircraft as directed.
  Documentation and Regulatory Compliance
  
• Complete, process, and maintain aircraft maintenance records and supporting documents, including BFS forms, AIP checklists, equipment manufacturers' forms, and parts approval documentation.
  
• Maintain a thorough working knowledge of applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, the BFS MPM, Operations Manual, Operations Specifications, standard operating procedures, and other pertinent technical information.
  
• Ensure company-owned and personally owned calibrated tools are within their required calibration intervals before use.
  
• Complete all required annual training, including substance-abuse awareness and applicable BFS Handbook requirements.
  Team and Field Operations
  
• Coordinate daily maintenance activities and provide technical direction to assigned technicians to support safe, timely, and effective aircraft operations.
  
• Ensure technician time-off requests, schedule changes, and shift swaps receive approval from the Helicopter Program Manager.
  
• Maintain company-owned local ground support equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
  
• Keep the assigned field support trailer clean and properly maintained; verify spare-parts inventory is accurate and updated regularly.
  
• Ensure support-trailer generators are serviced at the required intervals and that maintenance is properly documented.
  
• Perform other duties as assigned
  Requirements
  Required Qualifications
  
• Prior crew chief, assistant crew chief, or comparable aircraft maintenance leadership experience.
  
• Current and valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certificate.
  
• Current U.S. Forest Service (USFS) carding, as required for the assignment.
  
• High school diploma or equivalent.
  
• Current and valid driver's license.
  
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position and meet applicable regulatory requirements.
  
• Ability to pass required airport-security and background screening requirements.
  
• Ability and willingness to travel for work and provide after-hours or on-call support as required.
  
• Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a safety-sensitive environment.
  
• Ability to interpret technical manuals, maintenance instructions, regulatory requirements, and related technical information.
  Physical Demands and Work Environment
  The physical demands and work-environment conditions described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
  
• Frequently stand and walk; use hands and fingers for handling, gripping, and operating tools and equipment; and climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  
• Occasionally work at heights or in other areas requiring careful footing and heightened situational awareness.
  
• Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  
• Work near moving mechanical parts and in areas where fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and elevated noise levels may be present.
  
• Work both indoors and outdoors, including exposure to weather, extreme heat, and extreme cold.
  
• Use required personal protective equipment and follow all company safety procedures.
