Job Title:
Maintenance and Engineering Manager - Job Description This role leads maintenance and engineering activities with a strong focus on capital projects, facilities support, and utilities management. You will oversee the full lifecycle of capital expenditures, manage day-to-day maintenance operations, and guide engineering teams to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of equipment, buildings, and utilities. The position combines strategic planning, hands-on project management, and team leadership in a highly technical, process-driven environment. Responsibilities Review and manage approved capital projects, verify installation and progress, and provide regular status reports to leadership. Track the capital expenditure (CapEx) plan budget and ensure projects remain within approved financial parameters. Serve as a liaison between facilities, external engineers, and contractors to coordinate project execution and ongoing support. Provide technical and engineering recommendations for new equipment and technologies to improve reliability, efficiency, and safety. Maintain complete project documentation, including drawings, programs, contracts, and related records, and transfer all documentation to the facility upon project completion. Develop and prepare CapEx proposals, including process design, scope definition, budget estimates, and project schedules. Provide cost estimates, solicit proposals and quotes, and pre-qualify vendors and contractors to ensure high-quality and compliant service. Manage approved projects to meet performance targets, budget constraints, and schedule commitments. Negotiate contracts and terms and conditions with vendors and contractors to secure favorable and compliant agreements. Assemble and lead teams of internal and external resources to develop and deliver strategic engineering and maintenance projects. Coordinate and direct day-to-day operations of the maintenance department, including identifying needed repairs and improvements, setting project priorities, assigning work tasks, and scheduling work to support production requirements. Supervise and guide maintenance staff, including Maintenance Leads and the Maintenance Scheduler, by providing training and development, monitoring and evaluating performance, participating in hiring decisions, and addressing performance issues when necessary. Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and internal staff to review maintenance projects, including progress reports, work evaluations, and project details. Review facility utility usage and costs for electricity, gas, water, and sewer services, monitor metering, and oversee energy conservation programs. Document departmental activities using SAP, including maintenance parts, preventive maintenance, and work order scheduling, and prepare reports, work orders, maintenance schedules, and related records. Document and manage the maintenance budget for recurring and non-recurring expenses, including scheduled maintenance activities and unplanned breakdowns and unanticipated costs tracked through SAP. Approve and supervise all outside service technicians to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality work. Develop and maintain an inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment required for reliable operations. Manage project teams and lead engineering and maintenance teams to deliver on departmental objectives. Oversee the Utilities Department, including daily operations and project-related activities. Manage the maintenance training program, including coordination with the Training Manager of Maintenance, to build technical capability within the team. Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with cross-functional teams and provide support to achieve shared objectives. Manage administrative staff supporting maintenance and engineering functions. Utilize established processes and methodologies to drive continuous improvement, minimize losses, and uphold core operational standards and non-negotiables. Comply with occupational safety and health standards and all applicable rules, regulations, and orders, and ensure personal actions and conduct align with these requirements. Ensure compliance with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates, including relevant industry and regulatory standards. Determine required repairs for equipment, buildings, and utilities, and plan and direct related maintenance activities in alignment with production schedules. Ensure engineering projects, initiatives, and processes conform to established policies and objectives, recommend improvements, review progress, and approve cost estimates and proposals. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree and three to five years of related experience. Proven experience in maintenance management and supervision of technical teams. Hands-on knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanical systems, and preventive maintenance practices. Demonstrated ability to manage capital projects, including CapEx planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution. Experience ensuring engineering projects and initiatives align with established policies, objectives, and performance targets. Ability to determine needed repairs for equipment, buildings, and utilities and to plan and direct maintenance activities in coordination with production schedules. Strong ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and effectively delegate assignments. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond professionally to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, and members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to leadership, public groups, and boards of directors. Strong quantitative skills, including the ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to lead by example and share knowledge and skills with others. Proficiency in complex computer operations and advanced features of software such as AutoCAD and MS Project. Proficient personal computer skills, including email, record keeping, database activity, word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics. Commitment to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures and to report unsafe activities promptly. Willingness to participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience using SAP or similar systems for maintenance parts management, preventive maintenance, and work order scheduling. Experience in documenting and managing maintenance budgets for recurring and non-recurring expenses. Experience negotiating contracts and terms and conditions with vendors and contractors. Familiarity with energy management, utility usage analysis, and conservation programs. Experience working with external architects, engineers, and contractors on maintenance and capital projects. Experience managing utilities operations and related project activities. Exposure to regulated environments with strict food safety or similar compliance requirements. Comfort working in both administrative and industrial settings, with the ability to transition between office work and on-floor activities as needed. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role involves a mix of office-based and facility-based work in an industrial environment. Physical demands regularly include sitting, talking, listening, and frequent use of hands and fingers for computer and administrative tasks. You will frequently stand and walk within the facility and occasionally reach with hands and arms, crouch, stoop, and climb to access equipment and work areas. The position requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds and sufficient manual dexterity to handle tools, components, and documentation. The work involves primarily sedentary administrative activities when planning, scheduling, and documenting maintenance and capital projects, combined with time in production and utility areas to observe operations and supervise work. The ability to identify and distinguish colors is important for working with wiring, indicators, and technical documentation. Noise levels may be moderate, such as those associated with office equipment or light industrial traffic, with occasional exposure to higher noise levels in operational areas. The role requires adherence to all safety and food safety procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment as required by specific tasks and facility policies.
