The Director of Fleet Maintenance is responsible for the overall management, reliability, safety, and operational readiness of the company's auto-hauling fleet transportation fleet and maintenance operations. This position provides leadership and oversight for preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, vendor relationships, maintenance facilities, equipment, and maintenance personnel. The Director will work closely with Operations, Safety, Dispatch, Finance, and Executive Leadership to ensure the fleet is maintained efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable federal, state, and company requirements. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in the auto transportation/car-hauling industry, strong knowledge of truck and trailer maintenance, excellent leadership skills, sound financial judgment, and the ability to develop processes that minimize downtime and control maintenance costs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee all maintenance operations for company-owned trucks, trailers, and related equipment. Establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules based on manufacturer recommendations, mileage, engine hours, and company requirements. Monitor fleet condition and ensure vehicles are repaired and returned to service in a timely manner. Develop strategies to reduce vehicle downtime and improve fleet availability. Review maintenance records and identify recurring mechanical issues and opportunities for improvement. Ensure vehicles are properly maintained before being placed into service. Leadership & Personnel Management Lead, supervise, and develop maintenance managers, technicians, and other fleet maintenance personnel. Establish clear performance expectations and accountability for the maintenance team. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations for maintenance employees. Ensure technicians have the appropriate tools, equipment, training, and resources to perform their jobs safely and effectively. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Compliance & Safety Ensure fleet maintenance practices comply with applicable FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, state, and local requirements. Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, preventive maintenance, and vehicle history. Work closely with the Safety Department to address inspection violations, out-of-service issues, and recurring equipment concerns. Ensure required inspections and maintenance are completed within established timeframes. Participate in investigations involving vehicle-related accidents, equipment failures, and safety concerns. Ensure maintenance facilities and employees follow appropriate safety procedures. Budget & Cost Management Develop and manage the fleet maintenance budget. Monitor maintenance expenses, parts costs, labor costs, outside repairs, and vendor charges. Analyze maintenance costs by vehicle, equipment type, location, and repair category. Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenses without compromising safety or reliability. Review and approve maintenance invoices in accordance with company procedures. Provide regular maintenance cost reports and recommendations to Executive Leadership. Vendor & Facility Management Establish and maintain relationships with repair facilities, parts suppliers, mobile mechanics, and other maintenance vendors. Negotiate pricing, service agreements, warranties, and other vendor arrangements when appropriate. Evaluate vendor performance, pricing, quality, and turnaround times. Oversee maintenance facilities to ensure they are properly equipped, organized, and maintained. Coordinate facility repairs, equipment purchases, and maintenance-related capital expenditures. Fleet Planning & Asset Management Work with Executive Leadership and Operations to develop long-term fleet replacement and equipment plans. Make recommendations regarding truck and trailer replacement based on age, mileage, maintenance history, reliability, and operating costs. Monitor fleet utilization and identify underperforming or high-cost assets. Assist with purchasing decisions for trucks, trailers, shop equipment, tools, and other maintenance-related assets. Maintain accurate records of company fleet assets. Technology & Reporting Ensure fleet maintenance information is accurately entered and maintained in the company's fleet management and maintenance systems. Monitor maintenance KPIs, including: Preventive maintenance compliance Vehicle downtime Repair turnaround time Maintenance cost per mile Cost per vehicle Roadside breakdowns Repeat repairs Parts and labor expenses Use data and reporting to identify trends and improve maintenance performance. Provide regular reports and recommendations to Executive Leadership. Performance Expectations The Director of Fleet Maintenance is expected to maintain a safe, reliable, and cost-effective auto-hauling fleet while providing strong leadership and support to the maintenance team and drivers. Success in this position will be measured through fleet availability, preventive maintenance compliance, reduced equipment downtime, maintenance cost management, regulatory compliance, reduction in roadside breakdowns, technician performance, and the ability to support the company's operational and customer commitments.

Pay:

$110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
