Job Description

We are seeking our next Assistant Director - Maintenance Operations who will be all-in on our mission and who plans, organizes, and coordinates daily maintenance activities, including routine work, preventive maintenance, small projects, and emergency response. This role supports long-range maintenance planning and resolves facility issues using internal resources. The position also oversees critical campus systems, including the central plant, utilities distribution, emergency power, fire and life safety systems, access control, and building automation, ensuring reliable 24/7/365 operations.
EDUCATION
:
Required:
High School Diploma or GED. Vocational training in HVAC or Electrical coursework.
Preferred:
Associate's Degree with vocational training in HVAC or Electrical coursework.
EXPERIENCE
:
Required:
Five (5) years of journeyman-level experience with three years of supervisory experience in facility maintenance operations. Chiller plant operation experience.
Preferred:
Six (6) or more years of journeyman-level experience and supervisory experience in facility maintenance operations. Chiller plant operation experience.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSES
:
Required:
Valid Texas Class C Driver's License with a 3-year safe driving record.
Preferred:
Master Plumbing License or HVAC General Contractor's License or Master Electrician License. Oversee and direct maintenance and operations services for college grounds, infrastructure, facilities, and equipment within assigned areas. Supervise day-to-day operations, including planning, prioritizing, and assigning work for maintenance staff to ensure efficient completion of routine work, preventive maintenance, projects, and emergency requests. Serve as a member of the departmental leadership team and assist the Director in strategic planning, budgeting, and implementation of departmental goals and long-range maintenance plans. Supervise assigned personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and corrective action in accordance with Amarillo College procedures. Manage vendor and contractor relationships, including procurement coordination, performance oversight, and ensuring quality service and cost effectiveness. Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive maintenance and operational programs to enhance efficiency, reliability, and asset longevity. Oversee scheduling systems and coordinate maintenance activities across campus to minimize disruption to operations. Administer energy management and building systems operations, providing technical oversight and guidance for efficient campus-wide system performance. Collaborate with campus departments to coordinate maintenance activities, establish project timelines, and resolve operational issues. Provide advanced technical oversight and support for maintenance functions, including HVAC systems, central plant operations, electrical systems, plumbing, and general building systems. Oversee inventory management, including ordering, tracking, and maintaining appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and materials. Ensure compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and proper operation and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and facilities. Identify operational challenges and partner with the Director to develop and implement effective solutions. Perform other duties as required. Strong written and verbal communication skills sufficient to coordinate work, provide direction, and address operational issues.
Salary:
Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position. Pay grade 13 Amarillo College Pay Grades (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job is frequently required to travel between offices, buildings, and campuses. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and maneuver cleaning and landscaping supplies, equipment and other objects up to 30 pounds. Must be able to maneuver heavier objects with assistance of others and/or appropriate equipment. Requires the ability to get down on and work on hands and knees, climb and work on ladders, and to stoop, bend, kneel, reach, crouch, and crawl as necessary.
Working Conditions:
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary.) May be required to report to work as scheduled when Amarillo College offices are closed due to severe weather. Timely and regular attendance for all employees is required to ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedules.
Work Environment:
- This position operates in a high-stakes, fast paced environment that blends administrative office work with active field supervision. They are responsible for managing staff, overseeing facility operations, ensuring safety compliance, and coordinating maintenance schedules, often while balancing budgetary constraints and vendor relationships. This position require work with minimal to little supervision. Self-sufficiency is critical.
