This position ensures that production equipment, refrigeration systems, utilities, building systems, and other facility assets operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The Maintenance Manager leads preventive and corrective maintenance programs, coordinates repairs with Production and Sanitation teams, manages maintenance resources and contractors, and works to minimize equipment downtime while maintaining compliance with food safety and workplace safety requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead, train, schedule, and supervise maintenance employees and technicians. Oversee daily maintenance operations and prioritize work based on production needs, equipment condition, and safety requirements. Develop, implement, and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs for production equipment and facility systems. Respond to equipment breakdowns and coordinate timely troubleshooting and repairs to minimize production downtime. Maintain production equipment, conveyors, mixers, packaging equipment, pumps, motors, compressors, refrigeration systems, and other machinery as applicable. Oversee maintenance of facility systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, doors, dock equipment, drainage, and other building infrastructure. Coordinate maintenance activities with Production, Sanitation, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, and Operations teams. Schedule maintenance work around production and sanitation activities to minimize operational disruptions. Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance, repairs, work orders, equipment downtime, and parts usage. Establish maintenance priorities and ensure work orders are completed accurately and on schedule. Monitor equipment performance and identify recurring failures or opportunities for improvement. Conduct root-cause analysis on significant or recurring equipment failures and implement corrective actions. Manage spare parts, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies to ensure critical items are available when needed. Monitor maintenance inventory and establish appropriate minimum and maximum stock levels for critical parts. Obtain quotes and coordinate work with outside contractors, service providers, and equipment vendors. Verify contractor work is completed safely and according to company specifications. Assist with equipment installation, upgrades, modifications, and facility improvement projects. Maintain equipment manuals, maintenance records, schematics, warranties, and other technical documentation. Ensure all maintenance work is performed in accordance with company safety policies and applicable regulations. Ensure maintenance activities do not compromise food safety or sanitary conditions. Participate in food safety, quality, safety, and regulatory audits as needed. Support facility inspections and promptly address maintenance issues identified during inspections. Establish and monitor department performance goals and maintenance KPIs. Coach and develop maintenance team members and provide performance feedback. Maintain an organized, safe, and professional maintenance shop and parts area. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Preventive Maintenance & Reliability The Maintenance Manager will establish and maintain a structured preventive maintenance program that includes: Production machinery. Conveyors and material-handling equipment. Motors, gearboxes, pumps, and bearings. Electrical systems and controls. Refrigeration and temperature-control systems. Compressed air and other utility systems. HVAC systems. Plumbing and water systems. Dock doors and loading equipment. Building infrastructure. Safety equipment and related systems. The manager will track equipment history and use maintenance data to identify recurring problems and opportunities to improve reliability and reduce downtime. Food Safety & Sanitation Because this position operates in a food production environment, the Maintenance Manager must understand the relationship between maintenance activities and food safety.
Responsibilities include:
Ensuring maintenance activities do not create contamination risks. Following company GMPs and food safety procedures. Ensuring tools, parts, lubricants, and maintenance materials are properly controlled in production areas. Using food-grade lubricants where required. Coordinating maintenance work with Sanitation and Quality Assurance. Ensuring equipment repairs and modifications meet sanitary design requirements where applicable. Properly cleaning and restoring equipment after maintenance activities. Supporting corrective actions related to maintenance findings during food safety inspections or audits. Maintaining appropriate documentation for maintenance-related food safety activities. Safety Responsibilities Enforce company safety policies and procedures within the maintenance department. Ensure employees use required PPE and follow safe work practices. Implement and enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures. Ensure employees are properly trained before performing hazardous maintenance tasks. Maintain safe practices for electrical work, welding, hot work, confined spaces, working at heights, and chemical exposure as applicable. Investigate maintenance-related accidents, incidents, and near misses. Correct unsafe equipment and facility conditions promptly. Coordinate with management and Safety personnel regarding workplace hazards. Qualifications 3-5 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing, food production, warehouse, distribution, or industrial environment. Previous maintenance supervisory or management experience preferred. Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices. Experience working with industrial production equipment. Ability to read equipment manuals, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and technical documentation. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple maintenance priorities in a fast-paced production environment. Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts when required. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a food manufacturing or food distribution environment. Experience with CMMS maintenance management systems. Knowledge of refrigeration systems. Knowledge of PLCs, sensors, VFDs, motors, and industrial controls. Electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or industrial maintenance certifications. Experience managing outside contractors and service providers. Experience with capital projects and equipment installations. OSHA safety training. Lockout/Tagout training. Experience supporting USDA-, FDA-, or other regulated food production facilities. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, parts, and equipment. Ability to bend, kneel, climb ladders and stairs, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas. Ability to work around operating machinery, moving equipment, electrical systems, refrigeration equipment, and other industrial hazards. Ability to wear required PPE. Ability to work in varying temperatures, including refrigerated, cold, hot, wet, and humid production environments. Schedule This position requires flexibility based on production schedules and equipment needs. Evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, and on-call work may be required to respond to equipment breakdowns and operational emergencies.
