Job :

This is field work in reading water and electric meters and recording consumption and usage. Work involves responsibility for accurately reading and recording the water and electric meters of residential, commercial, and industrial utility customers. Work requires some public contact. Work is usually performed on foot, but employees drive a light vehicle to obtain readings on assigned routes. Accuracy of work is checked through the review of completed readings. Work also involves some maintenance of water meters and water vaults, as well as maintaining assigned routes by providing the billing clerks with updated data for each account on the route.

• Reads water and electric meters on an assigned route; records readings by entering in a hand held unit.
• Lifts vault covers, pumps water from vaults, and climbs into vaults to record readings from large meters.
• Checks to see that meters are functioning properly; reports defective meters or unusual situations to a superior.
• Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

High school diploma

Experience:

Some experience involving public contact. A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of :

• The geography and street locations of the water and electric service area.

Skill and Ability to:

• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Write legibly and to take accurate readings.
• Deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
• Schedule work and accept the responsibility of meeting deadlines on a daily basis; ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
• Ability to deal with dogs.
• Must have both near and far acuity.

License or Certification Required:

Valid Ohio Driver's License Physical Demands:

Lift and carry 100 lbs. a distance of 50 feet, and 65 lbs. a distance of 100 feet; ability to climb stairs frequently; ability to walk long distances under very difficult situations including deep snow, and up and down hills; ability to climb ladders; ability to sit in a vehicle and get in and out of a vehicle frequently; ability to work in confined spaces.
