Job Description
A day in the life Step onto the mill floor at one of Mon Valley Works' three sites—Clairton Works, Irvin Works, or Edgar Thomson Works—and you'll immediately see how our Utility Persons keep production moving. You'll handle tools, support maintenance, and work alongside experienced teammates in a heavy industrial setting where safety is paramount. In this entry-level role, you'll begin as a Utility Person, learning the mill, assisting production and service units, and supporting equipment upkeep. After on-the-job training, you'll progress to the Utility Technician level, operating material-handling equipment such as overhead and mobile cranes of various sizes and types, tractors, trucks, dozers, loaders, boom trucks, and feeders. What you'll do Use basic hand tools and power tools—including pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power-actuated tools, and torches—to support producing units. Move, stage, and process materials and finished product safely and efficiently. Assist in routine equipment inspections and maintenance activities. Perform physical work, including lifting more than 25 lbs, and working with or around hot, heavy, or sharp materials and hazardous chemicals. Work in varied conditions—hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy—and, at times, in proximity to molten metal. Schedule and expectations Rotating 8-hour shifts, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Overtime as needed to support operations. Consistent attendance, punctuality, and self-direction are essential. Strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and respirator equipment when necessary. Minimum qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of a pre-employment digital assessment. Career path Start as a Utility Person and, after brief on-the-job training, move into a Utility Technician position with increased responsibility operating material handling equipment across the mill. Where you'll be considered With one application, you will be considered for opportunities across all three Mon Valley plants: Clairton Works, Irvin Works, and Edgar Thomson Works. Competency summary
