Role Description:
The Assistant Powerhouse Chief is a full-time, on-site role located in New York, NY, responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of the building's powerhouse and mechanical systems. This role assists in monitoring, operating, and maintaining high-pressure steam systems, boilers, and related equipment to ensure reliable heat and hot water service. The position involves daily inspections, logging equipment readings, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating repairs to avoid service interruptions. The Assistant Powerhouse Chief also helps oversee refrigeration and HVAC equipment, works with vendors and inspectors, and ensures compliance with city codes and safety regulations. This role may include shift work, emergency response to system alarms, and collaboration with other maintenance staff to support overall building operations.
Qualifications:
Must possess a valid High-Pressure Steam License issued by the appropriate New York City authority. Refrigeration License strongly preferred; experience with refrigeration and HVAC systems is a plus. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining boilers, high-pressure steam systems, and related mechanical equipment. Knowledge of building systems, including pumps, valves, controls, and safety devices; ability to read gauges and interpret technical data. Understanding of New York City mechanical, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to steam and refrigeration operations. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and capacity to respond effectively to emergencies and system issues. Ability to work on-site, stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and perform hands-on maintenance tasks safely. Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with supervisors, coworkers, residents, and external vendors. Prior experience in a powerhouse or central plant environment, or in large residential or commercial facilities, is highly beneficial. High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in mechanical, HVAC, or related fields is an advantage.
