Refrigeration Hvac / Maintenance About us Paden Cold Storage We are a cold-storage warehouse in Norfolk, Virginia, supporting refrigerated and frozen food storage operations. Keeping our equipment dependable and our facility safe is essential to our daily work. Our maintenance team plays a key role in keeping the warehouse running smoothly and meeting our safety and food quality standards. What We Are Looking For We're seeking a dependable Refrigeration / HVAC Maintenance Technician with hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial or industrial refrigeration and HVAC systems. The ideal candidate has strong electrical and mechanical skills and can diagnose issues with compressors, evaporators, condensers, motors, controls, and defrost systems. You should be able to work independently, perform preventive maintenance, respond to breakdowns, and maintain accurate service records. Experience with cold-storage facilities, ammonia refrigeration, and refrigerant-based cooler and freezer systems is preferred. This position works closely with our Chief Engineer to keep refrigeration equipment reliable and maintain proper storage temperatures. A commitment to safe work practices, comfort working in refrigerated and freezer areas, and willingness to assist with general facility maintenance are essential. Responsibilities Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair refrigeration and HVAC systems serving refrigerated rooms, freezers, and facility spaces. Perform preventive maintenance on compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, pumps, motors, and related equipment. Diagnose electrical and mechanical problems involving wiring, controls, sensors, valves, and defrost systems. Monitor operating temperatures, pressures, and equipment performance to maintain proper storage conditions. Troubleshoot ice buildup, drainage problems, airflow restrictions, and temperature fluctuations. Assist with Ammonia Refrigeration maintenance as well as HVAC/R systems Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and temperature alarms to minimize downtime and protect stored products. Maintain accurate inspection records, service logs, and work orders in the maintenance management system. Coordinate repairs, parts needs, and outside service work with the Chief Engineer. Required Skills & Qualifications Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing commercial or industrial refrigeration and HVAC equipment. Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including using a multimeter and reading wiring diagrams. Ability to diagnose problems with compressors, motors, fans, pumps, contactors, sensors, and controls. Understanding of refrigeration pressures, temperatures, superheat, subcooling, and defrost operation. Experience identifying refrigerant leaks, airflow restrictions, drainage issues, and ice buildup. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and maintain accurate service records. Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and safe equipment servicing practices. Basic plumbing, mechanical repair, and general facility maintenance skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize urgent repairs, and communicate clearly. Ability to work safely in refrigerated and freezer environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration and pumped recirculation systems. Experience maintaining cold-storage cooler and freezer equipment. EPA Section 608 Universal certification. RETA CARO or CIRO certification.
