DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, to install, diagnose and repair fixed and mobile radio transmission and receiving equipment and associated communications equipment; to set up public address and/or audio visual systems for County functions; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
The Telecommunications Equipment Installer is responsible for the mechanics of installing mobile radio and related communication equipment in public safety vehicles and base stations, and for assisting Telecommunications Technicians and Senior Telecommunications Technicians on more difficult jobs when required. The incumbent is generally not expected to independently trouble shoot or repair communications equipment. Supervision is received from the Manager, Communications Department (Electronic System Division), or a Senior Telecommunications Technician.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES NOTE
: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Installs mobile radios, license plate readers, laptop docking stations, broadband mobile devices, video, siren controllers and other related emergency communications, transmission and receiving equipment in vehicles for County departments, cities and special districts contracting for this service. 2. Installs control heads, speakers, sirens, microphones, switches, antennas and lightbars in above-named equipment by cutting and drilling holes and bolting equipment in place. 3. Uses equipment such as multimeters, foot-operated squaring shears, manual folding box brake, manual turret punch, drill press, MIG welder, grinder and acetylene torch; fabricates brackets, covers, and containers to fit various vehicles. 4. Removes receivers, transmitters, and related equipment from old or damaged vehicles. 5. Tests and repairs microphones by replacing cords, soldering connections, cleaning points, and replacing cartridges, capacitors, resistors and transistors. 6. Maintains lead-acid storage batteries in a clean condition, and periodically tests the gasoline and diesel emergency power plants. 7. Responds to requests to set up public address and/or audio/visual systems for a variety of County functions. 8. Assists Telecommunications Technicians or Senior Telecommunications Technicians in trouble shooting and repairing communications equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either Experience :
The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in automotive electrical or mechanical work, or in cable or alarm installation work. Or Some acceptable combination of education and appropriate experience that provides the stated knowledge and abilities of the class.
License :
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicles Operator's license.
Special Requirements :
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. Must be able to lift and carry weights up to 70 pounds. Must be able to climb poles and towers to 200 feet.
