Joint Use Field Technician Job Description The Joint Use Field Technician supports utility and telecommunications projects by performing field inspections, safety audits, and detailed data collection on overhead distribution infrastructure. This role focuses on assessing utility poles and communication attachments to ensure compliance with joint use standards, engineering requirements, and safety regulations. The technician gathers accurate field data, identifies safety concerns, and provides critical information to engineering teams for make-ready design, infrastructure upgrades, broadband expansion, utility programs, and joint use compliance initiatives. Responsibilities Perform field inspections of utility poles and overhead distribution systems for joint use projects. Collect detailed field data on pole height, class, and condition to support engineering analysis. Document communication and electric attachments on utility poles and verify their configuration. Inspect guying, anchors, and associated hardware to ensure proper installation and condition. Measure and record clearance distances to confirm compliance with safety and engineering standards. Capture high-quality photos, comprehensive field notes, and GPS-based location data for engineering review. Verify existing field conditions against established utility standards and design requirements. Conduct safety audits of utility poles and telecom attachments to identify potential hazards. Document safety hazards and prepare recommended corrective actions for review and follow-up. Prepare and submit clear, accurate inspection reports summarizing findings and recommendations. Support engineering and GIS teams by providing complete and accurate field data for make-ready design and infrastructure upgrades. Travel to multiple field sites, including overnight stays, to complete inspections and audits as scheduled. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience working in the field with utility poles and communication equipment on poles. Hands-on experience conducting inspections of utility poles and telecom attachments. Demonstrated experience performing safety audits on utility poles and overhead distribution infrastructure. Proven ability to document safety hazards and recommend corrective actions. Experience collecting data, photos, and detailed field notes for utility pole inspections. Familiarity with joint use concepts, including pole load considerations and safety audits. Experience preparing inspection reports with clear, accurate findings. Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight travel, to support field inspection work. Basic proficiency with GIS tools and workflows for field data support. Ability to work safely in the field and follow established safety procedures and guidelines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous GIS analysis or technician experience supporting utility or telecommunications projects. Experience using QGIS for mapping, data visualization, or spatial analysis. Experience working with ArcGIS or similar GIS platforms for field data and mapping. Background in documenting and organizing field data for engineering and compliance purposes. Familiarity with joint use standards and utility design requirements. Strong written communication skills for preparing clear inspection reports and documentation. Work Environment This role is field-based and involves frequent travel throughout Georgia to perform inspections at various utility and telecommunications sites. The technician regularly works outdoors around utility poles and overhead distribution infrastructure, often in varying weather and environmental conditions. The position requires overnight travel as needed to reach and complete assignments at different locations. The work environment involves the use of GPS-enabled devices, cameras, and mobile data collection tools, as well as interaction with GIS software such as QGIS and potentially other mapping platforms. Safety is a primary focus, and the technician follows established safety protocols while working in proximity to utility equipment and in active field settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Villa Rica, GA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $24.00/hr.
