Job Description
Job Title Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician Job Description As a SUE Technician, you will work primarily in the field as part of a small team responsible for identifying and mapping underground utilities to support the design of new roads, buildings, and infrastructure projects. You will help prevent construction risks caused by incomplete or inaccurate existing utility information and contribute to the development of GIS‑grade maps for municipalities, agencies, and private clients. All necessary tools, equipment, and a company vehicle are provided. This position requires travel throughout the Southeast, with potential opportunities to support teams in California, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. The Utility Services Department values internal growth and offers training for qualified candidates. Responsibilities Designate and mark subsurface utilities using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), sondes, and related equipment. Conduct site visits to identify, verify, and document existing utility locations. Perform pair counting and confirm utility ownership and cable sizes. Assist with operating and maintaining vacuum excavation (soft-dig) trucks. Understand and apply the various SUE quality levels. Read, interpret, and validate utility records and plans. Work independently in the field and provide direction to team members as needed. Perform QA/QC on utility services fieldwork. Communicate clearly with internal staff and on‑site clients. Stay current on new technologies, methods, and industry best practices. Support the Group Manager with administrative tasks, including tracking hours, mileage, and expenses. Train field staff and reinforce operational standards. Enforce company safety policies, protocols, and field procedures. Assist with technical tasks such as AutoCAD or MicroStation drafting. Essential Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years of utility designation experience. Valid driver's license (or ability to obtain one before employment). Ability to travel up to 60%. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and willingness to learn new software applications. Prior surveying experience. Background in utility locating, subsurface utility engineering, utility distribution, surveying, blueprint reading, or utility relocation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience using an iPad or tablet is a plus. UTA Certified Professional certification preferred. Work Environment & Physical Requirements This is a field‑based position involving outdoor work across a variety of weather and environmental conditions, including wet, humid, hot, cold, dusty, and noisy environments. Work occurs on active construction and project sites and may involve standing or walking for extended periods.
Physical requirements include:
Regular lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. Walking on rough, uneven terrain. Standing for 10-12 hours when required. Full range of physical movements, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, crouching, crawling, reaching, grasping, sitting, and walking. Overtime, weekends, and overnight travel may be required. Additional physical duties may be assigned as needed. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cary, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
