Fiber Optic / Traffic Communications Technician Position Overview We are seeking a Fiber Optic / Traffic Communications Technician to install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair fiber-optic and communications infrastructure supporting traffic and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This is a hands-on field position working with fiber networks, traffic signal communications, cameras, vehicle detection systems, dynamic message signs, network equipment, cabinets, and related infrastructure. The ideal candidate has experience in fiber optics, telecommunications, low-voltage communications, traffic signals, ITS, or a related construction environment and is comfortable troubleshooting technical issues in the field. Key Responsibilities Install, pull, route, terminate, splice, label, and test fiber-optic cable. Perform fiber splicing, connectorization, testing, and troubleshooting. Use OTDRs, optical power meters, light sources, and other diagnostic equipment. Identify and repair fiber breaks, signal loss, communication faults, and network connectivity issues. Install and maintain fiber enclosures, splice cases, patch panels, cabinets, connectors, and related equipment. Install and troubleshoot communications systems supporting traffic signals and ITS infrastructure. Work with traffic cameras, vehicle detection systems, dynamic message signs, traffic management systems, and related equipment. Install and maintain Ethernet, network, wireless, and other low-voltage communication systems. Perform underground and aerial fiber installations. Pull cable through conduit, innerduct, handholes, vaults, and other underground pathways. Assist with conduit installation and related communications infrastructure. Locate, identify, and document existing fiber and communications systems. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, drawings, maps, schematics, and technical documentation. Maintain accurate records of fiber routes, splices, testing results, equipment installations, and completed work. Troubleshoot communication outages and assist with restoring service safely and efficiently. Operate hand tools, power tools, fiber-testing equipment, lifts, bucket trucks, and other field equipment. Communicate job progress, field conditions, material needs, delays, and technical issues to supervisors and project leadership. Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials in safe working condition. Follow all work-zone, traffic-control, PPE, and job-site safety requirements. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Comfortable working around moving traffic and active construction zones. Ability to use or learn fiber-testing equipment, hand tools, power tools, and related field equipment. Ability to read and understand plans, diagrams, maps, schematics, and technical instructions. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a field team. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Strong communication and organizational skills. Preferred Fiber-optic installation and fusion-splicing experience. Experience using OTDR and fiber certification/testing equipment. Traffic signal or ITS experience. Ethernet or network communications experience. Experience with traffic cameras, CCTV, or vehicle detection systems. Underground utility, conduit, telecommunications, or communications construction experience. Fiber-optic, telecommunications, electrical, or ITS certifications. CDL or ability to obtain one if required. Physical & Work Requirements This is an active field position that may require: Standing and walking for extended periods. Lifting and carrying equipment and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Climbing ladders and accessing elevated work areas. Working from lifts or bucket trucks. Working around underground infrastructure, cabinets, handholes, and vaults. Bending, reaching, pulling, carrying, gripping, and performing repetitive physical tasks. Working outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Working safely near active roadways, construction equipment, and utility infrastructure. Pay:
