A day in the shipyard You arrive to the slipway as the sun clears the cranes. Before the first arc strikes, you've already walked the drawings, checked the layout lines, and mapped out the sequence to bring frames and stiffeners into true alignment. You turn paper plans into precise steel structures that will ride the water for decades. What you'll do Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and layout specifications to plan fabrication and assembly. Fit, align, and assemble structural components for ships, barges, and other marine vessels. Measure, cut, grind, and tack metal parts to prepare joints and seams for welding. Operate hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, grinders, and other shipyard equipment safely and efficiently. How you work Precision matters. You verify measurements twice, square up assemblies with care, and communicate clearly with welders and inspectors to keep the build on spec and on schedule.
