102 S Towanda Barnes Rd, Bloomington, IL 61705 Position Summary This is manual work in the performance of tasks in the maintenance of the road program. Work involves the performance of manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty requiring special knowledge and skills. Work is usually performed under supervision of a foreman or journeyman craftsman who assigns work both orally and in writing, and makes inspections to assure proper performance of work. Work involves the operation of trucks and other mechanized equipment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists Engineers in surveying, staking and associated tasks. Erects and maintains traffic signs and operates sign truck. Responsibilities of this job include manual labor in both skilled and unskilled tasks, primarily in snow plowing, hauling road materials, operating tractors and loaders. Plows snow, spreads salt and cinders, assists in maintenance of snowplow equipment and participates in rescue operations when necessary. Operates dump truck, snowplow, front-end loader, tractor and related equipment. Hauls stone, gravel, dirt, salt and timber. Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to read and write English. Knowledge of the type and uses of common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in maintenance and construction. Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment. Ability to perform a variety of laboring and manual tasks. Ability to understand and carry out specific oral and written instructions. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers, township commissioners and personnel, and the general public. Performs related work as necessary. Required Qualifications High school graduation, or possession of a GED Certificate. Preferred Qualifications Illinois Commercial Driver License, Class B with Air Brake endorsement. Physical Attributes/Demands Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, endurance, dexterity and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential duties, including the operation of mechanical hand and machine tools. Work requires lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds and reaching in front of body and overhead while lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work requires sitting, standing for long periods of time, and frequent kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, and crawling. Work Environment Some work is performed indoors at the maintenance facility, but mainly requires frequent trips outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Work exposes the employee to fumes, noise, extreme weather conditions, traffic and moving maintenance vehicles. The County is also the largest in Illinois at 1,186 square miles, which is larger than the State of Rhode Island. In addition to the County roads, the County Highway Department helps the 30 area Townships with their 1,539 miles of roadway. Besides these roads, McLean County has 89 bridges and the Townships have 247 bridges over 20 feet in length that the department inspects biannually.
