APPRENTICE OR LINEMAN

Electric Distribution Reports To:
Electric Distribution Superintendent Position Summary Under the supervision of the line foreman, the Apprentice Lineman or Lineman performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction and maintenance of the city's electric distribution system. The employee in this position is responsible for exercising judgement as to the details of assigned work within prescribed operating procedures. The Apprentice Lineman is responsible for maintenance of power lines, electrical equipment, and transformers. Portions of work are conducted in potentially hazardous conditions due to the presence of energized electrical conductors and accessories. Examples of Work
  • Builds and maintains electrical;
  • Builds and maintains transformer banks;
  • Hooks up primary and secondary metering and switching gear;
  • Sets and climbs electrical poles;
  • String new conductors;
  • Operates a bucket truck, tree pruners, chipper and chainsaw;
  • Trims trees for line clearance;
  • Maintains lights at ball fields;
  • Installs street lights and wiring;
  • Installs utility poles;
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary Experience One to three years of electric distribution installation and maintenance experience is preferred.
Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position. Education High School Diploma or GED required. Skills Thorough knowledge of all primary circuit feeds, load consumption, metering ratios, electrical hook-ups, safety procedures, and all types of transformer banks. The ability to operate a bucket truck, electrical test equipment and meters, fault locators, and other related equipment Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to utilize objects, tools, equipment or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include working closely with others, moderate levels of public contact, and irregular working hours. Problem Solving & Decision-Making Limited problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include repairing electrical lines and poles in adverse weather conditions and determining when electrical wires are hot. Accountability Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of department and does not participate in the annual departmental budgetary process. Supervision Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the Electric Distribution Superintendent and/or Journeyman Lineman. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel. Personal Relations Frequent contact with other city departments and the general public. Residency The employee working in this position is required to reside within a thirty (30) minute response time of Garnett City Hall. Working Conditions Adverse weather conditions and working with live power lines and electricity are factors in this position. Salary and Hours The pay for this position is $26.00 - $34.00 per hour with excellent benefits, pay is based off qualifications. This position works. The work schedule for the Apprentice will be eight-hour day shifts in a forty-hour work week. Nights, weekends, and holiday call outs or shifts may arise in the event of a power outage.
