Job Description

Job Overview The purpose of this position is to perform electrical distribution line construction, maintenance and repair tasks for the City of Osawatomie. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates diggers, bucket trucks, hand tools near and around electrical distribution lines. Operates live-line tools to connect and disconnect distribution lines and components.
  • Performs work on lines energized at 120 through 34KV.
  • Frames, sets, removes poles and associated anchors and guys.
  • Performs, or assist work done in Substation's.
  • Climbs poles, structures, or ladders.
  • Connects transformers.
  • Reconnects meters and transfers meters.
  • Locate underground electric cable faults for repair
  • Installs primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical system.
  • Participates in on-call status.
  • Plans and directs on-site maintenance/repair task.
  • Contacts customers regarding temporary power outages and tree trimming operations and possible damage.
  • Repair and maintain streetlights and traffic lights.
  • Trim trees and removes and chips brush.
  • Operates loader backhoes, dump trucks, jack hammer, woodchippers, and chain saws.
  • Receives and responds to customer inquiries and complaints and performs corrective action in response to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Provides leadership/training to the Apprentice lineman.
  • All other duties as assigned. Section 1: Minimum Job Requirements
  • Journeyman Lineman Certification is required.
  • Commitment to safe working practices and knowledge of safety policies/procedures.
  • Bucket truck and pole top rescue certification
  • Adapt to technological changes as they are implemented
  • Valid Commercial driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Act as a leadership or foreman as needed.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Must reside within a 10-mile radius of Osawatomie's City Hall
  • Understand and carry out concisely, both oral and written instructions.

Judgement and Situational Reasoning Ability - Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgement in performing diversified work activities, and the ability to exercise the judgement, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria. Section 3: Physical Requirements Ability to exert heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, carrying, and lifting, pushing and pulling up to 75 pounds. Ability to recognize individual characteristics of color, forms, sounds, odors, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and ingredients Section 4: Working Conditions This position requires working under mildly safe and uncomfortable conditions under direct supervision, where exposure to environmental factors, such as temperature variations, odors, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, vehicular traffic and/or dust cause discomfort and where there is risk of serious injury. This is highly physical work that regularly requires working outside and occasionally works inside. The position is frequently exposed to natural weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. Section 5: Work Schedule This position generally works eight (8) hours, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). This position is required to assist in response to emergencies and emergency operations during off-duty times. Emergency response shifts can occur at any time, day or night, seven days per week including holidays. This position is required to participate in the City's standby (on call) program.
