Non-Exempt As a Wind Farm Technician II, this role supports the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of one or more wind farms and related renewable energy facilities to ensure maximum asset availability and performance in alignment with RWEA Operations' mission. This role independently performs scheduled and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and system testing across wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) assets while adhering to site-specific policies, Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements, and applicable regulations. This role diagnoses and resolves moderate technical issues, escalating complex problems when necessary. It contributes technical input to maintenance planning and continuous improvement initiatives, maintains accurate service documentation within the digital maintenance management system, supports plant tool and equipment readiness, and provides mentorship to Trainee and Associate Technicians while promoting a strong safety culture and team environment.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Performs safe and compliant operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) assets, including turbines and Balance of Plant (BoP) equipment, in accordance with all site-specific policies, procedures, and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements
  • Conducts scheduled services, major component replacements, corrective repairs, and system testing for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Independently diagnoses and resolves moderate technical issues, escalating complex problems as needed, provide technical input for maintenance planning, and support root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring issues
  • Accurately documents maintenance activities and equipment performance in the digital maintenance management system
  • Ensures compliance with local regulations, industry standards, and workplace policies
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives and site operational objectives to enhance system performance and reliability
  • Mentors and guides Trainee and Associate Technicians, contributing to team knowledge and safety
  • Collaborates with team members and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by management consistent with the Technician II role

Serves in an on-call capacity as assigned, maintaining continuous availability via mobile phone, responding to management or dispatch communications within 30 minutes, reporting to the work site within 2 hours when required, and remaining fit for duty at all times during on-call periods

Job Requirements and Experiences:

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Associate's degree or equivalent certification in renewable energy technology or electrical systems is a plus

Minimum 3 years of relevant hands-on technical experience in renewable energy, power generation, heavy industrial maintenance, or a closely related field

Vestas Wind Turbine Experience preferred

Unrestricted driver's license

Must live within 1 hour drive time to site

Solar or battery energy storage system (BESS) maintenance experience

Military experience in a technical field such as electrical, electronics, or mechanical systems

Industrial electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or power systems maintenance experience

Possession of a current Journeyman or Master Electrician license

Wind Technician certification or other industry-recognized credentials (in combination with hands-on field experience)

Proficient in following and creating standard work instructions, completing tasks independently or as part of an installation and maintenance team with minimal supervision

Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing priorities

Willingness to travel between sites and support cross-training in wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems (BESS)

Solid knowledge and practical experience with the use of hand and power tools, basic rigging, and signaling operations

Advanced ability to troubleshoot and repair electromechanical systems, including relays, motors, hydraulic systems, and to resolve issues of moderate complexity

Skilled in reading, interpreting, and analyzing electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic schematics and circuit drawings to guide troubleshooting and installations

In-depth understanding and independent application of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, including identification of energy isolation points and completion of relevant documentation

Strong working knowledge of renewable energy systems (wind, solar, BESS), power electronics, AC/DC converters, and an understanding of computer network communication protocols (desired)

Proficiency in monitoring and documenting equipment performance and operational data using digital maintenance management systems

Intermediate PC skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams) able to prepare and deliver technical presentations

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to collaborate internally and externally, mentor junior staff, and support a positive team culture

Demonstrated commitment to safety, professionalism, and continuous technical development

Initiative and critical thinking skills; able to work autonomously, make informed decisions, and contribute to operational efficiency and reliability improvements

May supervise and mentor Trainees and Associates on smaller projects and support higher-level technicians on complex assignments

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to maintain a body weight of 270 pounds or less to safely perform tower climbing and job-related duties

Able to safely climb wind towers daily, open/close hatch doors, and identify potential safety hazards

Capable of working in confined, elevated, and swaying environments, including walking across small surface areas within turbines

Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs, and to walk, climb, and stand for extended periods in extreme environmental conditions (heat, cold, wind, sun)

Ability and willingness to travel to and from various job sites as assigned

Work Environment:

The work environment includes a variety of settings such as offices, warehouses, and wind farm site locations. Responsibilities involve working in and around energized wind turbine generators and balance of plant equipment (including substations and pad mount transformers), with tasks performed both inside turbines and outdoors in all weather conditions and changing environments, including unstable conditions. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. RWE Americas is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas at this time.

Pay range:

The hourly base salary range for this position in Illinois is $32.52 - $44.00. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
