Job Title:
Manual Machinist Job Description This role focuses on precision machining of components for rotating equipment using manual mills and lathes in an industrial machine shop environment. You will work primarily with steel and stainless steel to produce high-quality parts that meet tight tolerances for critical applications in refineries, power plants, and other industrial facilities. Responsibilities Machine parts for rotating equipment such as pumps, shafts, couplings, rings, cases, turbines, and valves using manual mills and lathes. Set up manual mills and lathes, including selecting appropriate tooling, aligning workpieces, and configuring machine parameters for each job. Operate manual lathes and mills to produce parts to specification, maintaining tolerances down to two thousandths of an inch. Use presses and grinders, including end mills and other tooling, to perform finishing operations and achieve required surface quality and dimensions. Work primarily with steel and stainless steel, as well as other ferrous and non-ferrous materials, ensuring proper handling and machining techniques for each material type. Inspect machined parts during and after production to verify dimensions and tolerances, making adjustments to setups or processes as needed. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools, machines, and equipment remain in good working condition. Follow all shop safety procedures and guidelines while working around rotating equipment and heavy machinery. Stand for prolonged periods while operating equipment and performing machining tasks. Collaborate with shop personnel and leadership to meet production schedules and support consistent workflow for refinery and power plant customers. Essential Skills At least 4 years of experience operating manual mills and lathes. Hands-on experience as a manual machinist working with rotating equipment components. Proficiency operating manual lathes, including setup and precision turning operations. Proficiency operating manual mills, including setup and precision milling operations. Ability to hold tolerances down to two thousandths of an inch. Experience working with stainless steel and other ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Skilled in using presses for machining and assembly-related operations. Skilled in using grinders and end mills for finishing and precision work. Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial machinery and rotating equipment. Ability to stand for prolonged periods while operating machines in a shop environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Horizontal boring mill experience is a significant plus. Experience in refinery or rotating equipment environments is highly beneficial. Experience in machining parts for energy, municipal, or industrial applications is advantageous. Comfort working in a high-activity shop with consistent workload and overtime opportunities. Work Environment This position is based in an industrial machine shop that services refineries, power plants, and a variety of other customers in the energy and municipal sectors. The shop focuses on rotating equipment and uses manual mills, lathes, presses, grinders, and related machining tools. You will primarily work with steel and stainless steel, as well as other ferrous and non-ferrous materials, in a hands-on, production-focused environment. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with overtime available as needed, and employees are currently working 6 to 7 days per week. The environment is active and fast-paced, with a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and teamwork. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Benicia, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
