Salt Lake City, UT + local job sites (Summit & Wasatch Counties) About the Role Calaway Designs is a custom metal and wood fabrication shop specializing in high-end residential and commercial projects . We are hiring a Finish Craftsman/Installer who can use their expertise to guide our finish team and take designs from blue print and fabrication to installation. At Calaway Designs, we build one-of-a-kind pieces including custom doors, staircases and railings, fireplace surrounds, range hoods, bunk beds, shelving, and other architectural metal and woodwork. We are looking for an experienced Finish Craftsman/Installer to take ownership of the final stages of our projects before they leave the shop. This position is ideal for someone who has a high level of craftsmanship, understands how different materials need to be prepared and finished, and takes pride in producing a final product that looks exceptional. We are looking for someone who doesn't simply "get the job done," but understands what a high-quality finished product should look like and has the experience to make it happen. What You'll Be Responsible For Finishing & Surface Preparation Perform the final preparation and finishes for custom wood and metal designs Sand, grind, prep, fill, and otherwise prepare surfaces for finishing Apply stains, patinas, clear coats, sealers, paints, oils, and other specialty finishes Develop and match finishes to project specifications and samples Understand how different wood species, metals, and surface-preparation techniques affect the final appearance Identify imperfections before finishing and determine the appropriate method to correct them Perform finish work using spray equipment and other professional finishing tools Inspect finished work and make corrections when necessary before the project leaves the shop Protect finished surfaces during staging, transportation, and installation Quality & Craftsmanship Perform detailed quality-control inspections and punch-list work Work closely with fabrication and shop team members to identify and correct issues before finishing Help establish and maintain consistent finishing standards throughout the shop Train, guide, and assist other team members with finishing techniques and best practices Keep finishing areas, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and properly maintained Installation Assist with installation of custom metal and woodwork at high-end residential and commercial projects Read and understand shop drawings, dimensions, and installation details Help stage projects and prepare materials for transportation to the job site Verify site conditions and dimensions before and during installation Protect finished materials and surrounding surfaces during installation Complete final adjustments and punch-list items at the job site Step into a lead role on installations when your experience and knowledge are needed Required 3+ years of professional finishing experience in woodworking, cabinetry, architectural metalwork, furniture, or a related trade HVLP spray booth or other specialty finish experience Confidence reading shop drawings Ability to work independently and take ownership of finished work Ability to safely lift, move, and install large custom pieces Valid driver's license and clean driving record Reliable transportation to shop and job sites Preferred (Not Required) Experience installing materials on site Experience working with metal Metal finishing, patinas Leadership experience on site, or in a shop environment Why Work at Calaway Designs High-end, custom projects (not production or tract work) Authority and trust to lead teams and bring finished projects through the final stages of production Competitive pay with room for growth Overtime opportunities Flexible scheduling when possible Tools and safety equipment provided Small, skilled team where leadership and craftsmanship matter Work Environment Shop based in Salt Lake City, UT Install work primarily in Summit & Wasatch Counties Full-time, in-person role Apply If you're an with detail oriented finish worker with experience with metal and wood and take pride in leading high-quality woodwork, we want to hear from you.
