Job Description Optimus seeks a driven, hands-on Production & Fulfillment Technician with strong mechanical aptitude, a disciplined approach to quality, and a knack for making processes run better. This is a split role with the incumbent flexing their schedule as necessary to meet the needs of the organization, with wide variances in the focus of the role depending on customer needs. As a Production Technician, this person will become Optimus' Subject Matter Expert on all Vector System assemblies, partnering closely with our Quality Manager to ensure the highest quality product is provided to customers. When not actively building things, time will be spent owning shipping and fulfillment, making sure Vector System kits, finished assemblies, and replacement parts are picked, verified, packaged, and shipped accurately and on time. In both areas, the ideal candidate doesn't just do the work; they find ways to make it faster, more accurate, and easier to repeat. As a member of a small, autonomous team at a technology company actively building out processes and resources, the ideal candidate is comfortable working through unfamiliar problems, exercising independent judgment, and filling gaps in documentation and process, often by being the one who writes it. A methodical approach to problem solving, a disciplined eye for quality, a genuine interest in hands-on technical work, and a commitment to continuous improvement are crucial assets. While manufacturing or mechanical assembly experience is valuable, we are open to candidates from a variety of hands-on technical backgrounds, including industrial maintenance, automotive or diesel, military, and other skilled trades. This is a full-time, hourly position ($23.73-$27.98 per hour), based in our Pittsburgh, PA office. Optimus is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. People of color, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, veterans and members of other historically disenfranchised groups are strongly encouraged to apply. If you are unsure about being qualified for this position after reading the responsibilities and requirements, please apply anyway! We are most excited to work with individuals who learn quickly and have a passion for clean energy solutions. Key Responsibilities Production & Assembly Become the Subject Matter Expert on all Vector System assemblies and subassemblies, including the components therein and how each fits, functions, and is built correctly. Complete assigned manufacturing orders, with primary tasks relating to mechanical assemblies, subassemblies, and kits, and secondary tasks relating to electrical assemblies when needed, ensuring builds are completed accurately, safely, and in accordance with engineering documentation and quality standards. Program components necessary to the Vector System and replacement parts. Work closely with the Quality Manager to define inspection criteria and acceptance standards, perform quality inspections and functional testing on key components, and support nonconformance investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions. Serve as the go-to technical resource on the production floor, training and supporting other assembly technicians on build methods, quality expectations, and new or revised work instructions. Work with Engineering and Field Operations on prototypes, engineering changes, and vehicle fit-and-function testing, representing production and focusing on manufacturability at scale. Shipping & Fulfillment Own day-to-day shipping and fulfillment of Vector System kits, finished assemblies, and replacement parts, including picking, kitting, verifying orders against packing lists and bills of materials, packaging to protect product in transit, and preparing shipping labels and documentation. Perform final outgoing checks so every shipment is complete, correct, and properly documented before it leaves the facility. Coordinate outbound shipments with carriers and internal teams (Customer Success, Field Operations, and Sales) to meet customer and installation schedules, including obtaining freight quotes and scheduling parcel and LTL pickups. Receive, inspect, and put away incoming materials, and support inventory management through proper picking and returning of parts, material control protocols, cycle counts, and communicating discrepancies when identified. Maintain accurate shipping, tracking, and inventory records in MRPEasy and keep internal teams informed of shipment status. Continuously improve shipping and fulfillment processes by standardizing kitting and packing methods, developing packaging that reduces damage and cost, organizing staging and storage areas, and creating work instructions and checklists for fulfillment tasks. Track fulfillment metrics such as on-time shipment, order accuracy, damage and returns, and shipping cost, and use that data to identify, test, and implement improvements. Evaluate carriers, shipping methods, and packaging suppliers to find opportunities to reduce cost and transit time. Required Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of combined hands-on experience in manufacturing, mechanical assembly, shipping and receiving, warehouse, or fulfillment environments; experience in both production and fulfillment is strongly preferred. Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to assemble, disassemble, inspect, and correctly reassemble equipment. Comfort using hand and power tools, torque tools, and basic measuring tools such as calipers and gauges. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and bills of materials. Ability to accurately pick, pack, and verify orders, with close attention to completeness and shipping documentation. Ability to systematically troubleshoot a problem, isolate the root cause, and determine an appropriate fix. Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures, parts handling requirements, and cleanliness protocols with consistency. Comfort with basic computer tools such as email and spreadsheets, and the ability to quickly learn inventory, shipping, and production systems. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and balance production schedules with shipping deadlines. Consistent and high level of attention to detail, exemplified by pride in one's work and a disciplined approach to quality. Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with others to improve processes and resources. Preferred Experience Associate Degree, Technical School graduate, or trade certification. 5+ years of combined assembly and shipping or fulfillment experience. Experience with parcel carrier platforms (UPS, FedEx) and LTL freight, including freight quoting and bills of lading. Experience with lean or continuous improvement methods such as 5S, standard work, or kaizen. Experience developing packaging solutions or reducing shipping damage and cost. Experience with ERP/MRP or inventory management systems. Basic electrical assembly experience, such as wiring, crimping, or reading simple schematics. Other Job Requirements A passion for alternative energy solutions. Frequent physical activity such as bending, twisting, standing, and lifting of tools, parts, materials, and packages (up to 50 lbs). Ability to safely operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks. Work occurring in a variety of environments, including but not limited to: shop, warehouse, loading dock, office, and outdoor conditions. Ability to work around a variety of particulates, lubricants, and chemicals. Adaptive to ever-changing workload, conditions, and environments, including shifting priorities between production and shipping. Flexible hours of operation. Commitment to following safe work practices.
