Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Sterile Processing Technician to join our healthcare team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for ensuring that all medical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized, assembled, and prepared for surgical procedures. Your expertise will help maintain the highest standards of infection prevention and control, supporting patient safety and optimal clinical outcomes. Responsibilities Follow strict aseptic techniques during all stages of processing to prevent contamination and infection transmission. Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments for procedures while adhering to infection prevention policies.

Decontamination:

Receive, sort, clean, and decontaminate surgical instruments, trays, and equipment according to established infection control standards and Manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs).

Assembly & Packaging:

Inspect instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and damage with precision, ensuring all items meet strict quality standards. Assemble instrument sets and wrap or package them using appropriate sterilization barriers.

Sterilization:

Operate sterilization equipment following strict safety guidelines. Monitor, record, and verify sterilization cycle parameters and biological/chemical indicators to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Maintain detailed records of sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and instrument tracking

Inventory & Distribution:

Maintain accurate records of sterilized supplies and medical instruments, accurately tracking usage and replenishing stock as needed. Proficiency in inventory management systems to track supplies efficiently.

Quality Assurance:

Adhere to regulatory guidelines (AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, and AAAHC standards) to ensure zero defect rates in instrument processing. Extensive knowledge of sterile processing practices, including medical instrument assembly, packaging, and sterilization methods. Participate in licensing and regulatory inspections.

Qualifications & Requirements Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Certification:

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD preferred (or required within 12 months of hire).

Experience:

1+ years of experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center sterile processing department preferred; entry-level candidates with formal training may be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Skills & Knowledge:

Must have a strong understanding of human anatomy and physiology relevant to surgical procedures and instrument handling. Knowledge of surgical terminology, instrument sets, and medical equipment. Familiarity with infection control protocols, aseptic techniques, and sterilization methods. Ability to read, understand, and stringently follow written instructions and IFUs. Physical Demands & Working Conditions Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8-12 hour shifts). Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling of instrument trays and equipment weighing up to 40-50 lbs. Manual dexterity and visual acuity to inspect small, delicate instruments. Exposure to chemical cleaning agents, steam, biohazardous materials, and sharp instruments requiring strict adherence to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines.
