Chemical Operator General Job Description:

Operates, maintains and controls chemical process equipment for manufacturing Cellulose Acetate. Monitors instruments, adjusts valves and gauges, and interprets chemical reactions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Monitor equipment in their assigned work area.
• Control instruments and ensure they are working properly
• Submit work notifications for corrective maintenance needs
• Shutdown or startup equipment
• Perform testing and record product and/or raw materials test results
• Suggest adjustments to the manufacturing process as necessary
• Wash and rinse reactors
• Add chemicals or products as required
• Operate equipment to adjust speed of chemical reactions or yields
• Operate distributive control systems and semi-automatic systems
• Report spills or dangerous conditions
• Collect and analyze samples of products
• Interpret chemical reactions on monitors
• Review laboratory tests for process adjustments
• Walk down the process to ensure efficient production
• Regulate and shut down equipment if necessary
• Use steam to defrost frozen valves
• Operate and test towers, tanks, scrubbers, collectors and driers
• Test equipment for malfunctions
• Calculate material requirements and collect appropriate materials
• Ensure chemicals are stored properly
• Check tank levels
• Calculate material yields
• Keep track of instrument readings
• Adjust power, steam, water and air supplies
• Perform leadership duties for staffing, training, safety, environment or material handling Qualifications for the

Job:

1. Job skills, training requirements or training required: High School Diploma or GED is required. An associate's or technical degree, chemical process certificate or manufacturing experience highly preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have valid driver's license. Willing and able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including overtime, sometimes on short notice. Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required, such as steel toe shoes &/or boots, hard hat, high visibility clothing, respirator and protective eyewear. Willing and able to perform various physical requirements, including but not limited to, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, repetitive movement and performing overhead work. Must be able to read, write legibly, study and comprehend training material, policies and procedures to perform the job assignment. Must be able to communicate clearly with others orally, in writing and electronically. Must be able to use a Personal Computer (PC) in order to access and use various information sources (for Operating Procedures, On-Line Training, Company Information, etc.) and manufacturing information systems. 2. Physical requirements Must be able to climb stairs and ladders. Must be able to work overtime as requested and come in for special meetings. Must be able to perform basic maintenance tasks. Must be able to perform general housekeeping tasks. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more on a regular daily basis. Must be able to maneuver 600 lbs. pulp rolls to line for hammermill. 3. Mental Requirements Must be able to understand, interpret and remember written and oral instructions. Must be mentally alert. Must be able to interact cooperatively and constructively with supervision and coworkers. Must be able to work harmoniously in a team environment. Must be able to coordinate performing multiple job functions simultaneously. 4. Safety Requirements Must be able to wear required protective equipment (PPE). Must understand and follow all applicable safety requirements and expectations.

Key Competencies:

1. Must be able to constantly monitor all surroundings and be aware of possible dangerous situations. 2. Must be able to trouble shoot process equipment problems to make correct decisions in a timely manner. 3. Must be able to recognize out-of control situations. 4. Must be able to manipulate rolls of pulp to feed hammermill. 5. Must be able to operate ester manufacturing equipment/systems 6. Must be able to take proper corrective actions to recover process stability. 7. Must be able to rotate through different assignments. 8. Must be able to use email, receive, and read messages. 9. Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts. 10. Must be an active participant in team meetings and occasionally on special project teams. 11. Operate a lift truck to unload railcars and trailers, load ramps, shipping containers and store materials. 12. Perform bulk trailer filling, sea bulk container filling and super-sack container filling tasks. 13.
