Surgical Instrument Processing Specialist Location:
San Antonio, TX Job Type:
Full-time Work Setting:
Office-Based Surgery Center Schedule:
Monday-Friday, with occasional schedule flexibility based on surgical volume About Us We are a high-volume, physician-owned office-based surgery center focused on providing a controlled, safe, and exceptionally clean surgical environment. Our center supports a wide range of plastic surgery procedures and maintains high standards for infection prevention, instrument processing, sterilization, documentation, and regulatory compliance. We are looking for an experienced Sterile Processing Technician who takes ownership of the entire sterile processing workflow and understands that excellent surgical care starts long before the patient enters the operating room. The Position The ideal candidate is experienced, highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently in an office-based surgical environment. You should be familiar with the complete instrument-processing cycle, including point-of-use treatment, cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and documentation. This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone who can walk into an established surgical environment and confidently manage sterile processing according to current standards and facility policies. Responsibilities Perform cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments Properly operate and monitor sterilization equipment and related processing equipment Perform and document Bowie-Dick testing and other required sterilizer testing Understand biological, chemical, and mechanical sterilization monitoring Maintain accurate sterilization and load documentation Understand appropriate sterilizer maintenance and routine equipment checks Identify and troubleshoot processing or sterilization issues and appropriately escalate problems Perform thorough instrument inspection and identify damaged, malfunctioning, or improperly functioning instruments Maintain surgical instrument sets and ensure trays are complete and properly assembled Understand appropriate cleaning solutions, detergents, enzymatic cleaners, and instrument-care products Follow manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs) for instruments, sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic equipment, and other processing equipment Maintain appropriate separation of contaminated and clean/sterile workflows Maintain sterile storage areas and monitor expiration/event-related sterility according to facility policy Ensure adequate inventory of sterile supplies, wraps, pouches, indicators, and processing supplies Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant sterile processing environment Participate in infection prevention and quality assurance activities Maintain required logs, records, testing documentation, and maintenance records Communicate effectively with surgical staff regarding instrument availability, damaged instruments, missing components, and processing concerns Assist with maintaining readiness for the daily surgical schedule Follow OSHA, CDC, AAMI, manufacturer, and applicable regulatory requirements and facility policies Required Qualifications Current sterile processing certification required At least 2 years of sterile processing experience, preferably in an operating room or surgical facility Experience with surgical instrument processing in an active surgical environment Demonstrated knowledge of sterilization principles and infection prevention Experience with Bowie-Dick testing and sterilizer monitoring Experience with routine sterilizer/equipment maintenance and troubleshooting Strong understanding of instrument cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization Ability to read and follow manufacturer IFUs Strong attention to detail and documentation skills Ability to work independently and take ownership of the department Reliable attendance and strong organizational skills Preferred Qualifications Two or more relevant sterile processing certifications Experience in a plastic surgery operating room or office-based surgery center Experience with steam sterilization and other sterilization modalities used in surgical environments Experience with ultrasonic cleaners and/or instrument washers Familiarity with AAMI standards and infection prevention practices Experience preparing complex plastic surgery instrument sets Experience maintaining sterilization records and quality assurance documentation
What We're Looking For:
We are looking for someone who is experienced, proactive, meticulous, and accountable. You should be the type of person who notices when an instrument isn't functioning correctly, recognizes when a sterilization process isn't right, knows what needs to be documented, and addresses the issue rather than waiting for someone else to find it. We don't want someone who simply runs instruments through a machine. We want someone who understands the entire sterile processing system and can take ownership of it. Compensation Competitive pay based on experience and certifications. Candidates with multiple current certifications and significant surgical/office-based processing experience will be considered for higher compensation. To Apply Please submit your resume along with your current sterile processing certifications. Candidates selected for an interview should be prepared to discuss their experience with sterilizer testing, Bowie-Dick testing, instrument cleaning and inspection, sterilizer maintenance, documentation, and infection prevention practices.
