Machinist Job Description The Machinist sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of machine tools to produce both large and small precision parts to exact specifications. This role involves working with CNC equipment, including multi-axis machines, and using precision measuring instruments to ensure high-quality results in a demanding aerospace environment. Responsibilities Machine large and small parts to precise specifications using lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, and vacuum fixtures. Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools as well as specialized and advanced variations to perform precision machining operations. Operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines to produce complex components according to engineering drawings and process instructions. Use precision instruments such as micrometers and other measuring tools to verify dimensions and tolerances. Edit CNC programs as needed to optimize machining processes and ensure part accuracy. Bore high-precision holes and perform other critical machining tasks that require tight tolerances. Read, understand, and follow detailed step-by-step procedures, work instructions, and job travelers. Perform machine setup activities, including loading tools, setting offsets, and securing workpieces using appropriate fixtures and vacuum systems. Monitor machines during operation, make adjustments as necessary, and identify issues that could affect quality or efficiency. Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures while operating machinery. Collaborate with team members and support personnel to resolve machining challenges and improve processes. Essential Skills Minimum of 2 years of experience operating 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines. Experience working in an aerospace environment for at least 2 years. Hands-on experience with CNC equipment such as Mazak, gantry machines, and Makino machines. Proficiency in setting up CNC machines, including tool selection, fixturing, and offset setup. Ability to edit CNC programs to refine tool paths, feeds, and speeds. Demonstrated experience boring high-precision holes and holding tight tolerances. Ability to read, understand, and follow detailed, step-by-step procedures and work instructions. Skilled in using precision measuring instruments, including micrometers and related inspection tools. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate parts. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with multi-axis CNC machining in a production or high-precision environment. Familiarity with vacuum fixtures and other specialized workholding methods. Comfort working with a variety of machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders. Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make appropriate adjustments to equipment or programs. Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in continuous improvement of machining processes. Shifts available include Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (1st shift), Monday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. (2nd shift), and a weekend shift from Friday through Sunday, 5:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Some overtime may be required based on production demands. The environment emphasizes precision, safety, and adherence to documented procedures, with a structured and consistent schedule in a shop-floor setting. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Wichita, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45760.00 - $52000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
