Job Description

Summary of Job
  • This role is responsible for setting up and operating the machines within our High Performance Cell.
The equipment includes a Swiss style turning center, a 4 station rotary cutting and end work machine, and a 10 station rotary turning / milling machine. With the complex nature of product manufactured in the CNC department, set up and related tooling is a critical part of the process. The change would create a new role to use our best and most motivated people to focus on troubleshooting and machine set up thus allowing operators to concentrate on increasing output and achieving quality standards. This role would have close relationship with CNC programmers, tooling vendors, and operators. This department works on a 3 on/4 off rotation.

  • 6:30am Function & Scope of Responsibility
  • Follow all departmental and company safety rules and procedures; perform setups and machine interventions using approved safe practices.
  • Receive and interpret prints, setup sheets, routings, work orders, material requirements, and production instructions.
  • Pre-stage tooling and support material staging so changeovers and production can proceed with minimal interruption.
  • Safely set up and operate HPC equipment and relevant tooling; change and adjust tools and inserts as required.
  • Use calipers, micrometers, scales, gage blocks, height gages, and other approved measuring equipment to verify product to print.
  • Perform first-piece/in-process inspection, recognize nonconforming product, worn tooling, and abnormal machine conditions, and take appropriate action.
  • Provide operational and troubleshooting assistance to machine operators and communicate status/issues to area leadership.
  • Maintain accurate production, quality, setup, and other required records.
  • Support 5S, tooling organization, SMED/changeover improvement, throughput improvement, DVC/cost reduction, and testing of inserts, tooling, and materials.
  • Maintain the work area in a neat and orderly condition and perform other reasonable duties assigned by the supervisor.
  • Perform standard setups/changeovers and prove out activities after qualification using setup sheets, programs, and procedures
  • Troubleshoot routine tooling quality, saw, robot, machine, and loading/unloading issues; escalate complex or recurring conditions to A Tech, programmer, maintenance, or leadership.
  • Demonstrates a proven ability to maintain continuous production within the work center by supporting A Tech operations and ensuring all tooling, materials, and other resources required for production is properly stagged and readily available
  • Build proficiency across HPC controls and equipment by apprenticing with the A Tech in setups and troubleshooting. Authority/Decision Making
  • Low level decision making required in regards to general machining and optimization of work cell flow. Leadership/Managerial/Supervisory Responsibility
  • This role has no supervisory responsibilities Skills, Knowledge, Experience Required
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, tolerances, setup sheets, and work instructions
  • Hands-on CNC operation experience or strong mechanical aptitude, root cause identification, and problem solving ability
  • Knowledge of tooling and inserts, and an understanding of the effects of offsets, feeds, speeds, and tool wear on the finished part.
  • Competence using precision measuring equipment, including calipers and micrometers
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to nonconforming product and abnormal machine conditions
  • Safety mindset, attention to detail, reliability, punctuality, willingness to learn, coachability, and ability to adapt in a fast paced manufacturing environment
  • Experience with complex automation/robotics, Swiss lathes, rotary machining centers, CNC lathes, live tooling/Y-axis, 5-axis equipment, or multiple CNC controls preferred Education or Professional Qualifications
  • Vocational/technical machining training or two years of relevant setup and/or operation experience.
  • Experience with trouble shooting and problem solving methods
  • Prior safe material-handling/overhead-crane experience where applicable. Other Requirements/ Comments
  • Must be able to work required schedules and flex working hours/shift patterns to support business needs.
  • Manufacturing environment may include loud noise, temperature variation, moving equipment, coolant/oils, and other normal machining conditions.
  • Must successfully complete machine-specific training and demonstrated qualification before independently performing restricted setup, programming, robot, or machine functions.
