Role Description The Technical Designer / CNC Programmer is a full-time, in shop role based in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. This job involves translating design concepts and architectural drawings into precise technical drawings and CNC-ready files for custom millwork and fabrication projects. Day-to-day tasks include developing detailed shop drawings, programming CNC machines for woodworking, verifying measurements and material specifications, and collaborating closely with designers, engineers, and production teams to ensure accurate and efficient fabrication. The individual in this role will review and refine designs for manufacturability, troubleshoot technical issues on the shop floor, maintain organized documentation, and support quality control throughout the production process. Qualifications Technical Design and Architecture skills to interpret concepts into accurate technical drawings and shop documents. Pattern Making, Garment Construction, and Fitting skills that demonstrate precision in translating designs into buildable forms and assemblies. Experience with CNC programming and operation, including CAD/CAM software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, or similar). Strong understanding of woodworking, millwork construction methods, and familiarity with metal fabrication processes. Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, technical specifications, and production schedules. High attention to detail, spatial awareness, and strong problem-solving skills in a fabrication environment. Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with design, engineering, and shop teams on-site. Relevant technical or design education, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience in millwork, fabrication, or industrial design.

Duties:

Collaborate with carpenters and the foreman to technically design millwork and furniture. Convert architectural drawings and design sketches of millwork from designers into 3D CAD files able to be fabricated. Create shop drawings of millwork to communicate fabrication details to clients. Create fabrication shop drawings of millwork for subcontractors. Create assembly shop drawings for carpenters detailing how to assemble and install millwork. Program and operate CNC router machines. Operation of CNC router includes loading material, organizing parts, and disposal of waste material. Perform advanced CNC router procedures including 3D profiling and flipmills. Perform general CNC router maintenance. Aid in other general shop duties as needed.
