We build pipe skids, custom air handling units, modified equipment, and modular mechanical systems across our Manufacturing, Custom AHU, and Modifications divisions. Every unit ships to a commercial or industrial customer, and the finish is the first thing they see. We are looking for an Industrial Painter / Coating Technician to prep and coat structural steel, skid frames, piping assemblies, and equipment housings. You will work from job packets and coating specifications in a controlled shop environment, preparing surfaces and applying primers and topcoats to assemblies that get crated and shipped. The role is spec-driven. Film thickness, cure times, and mix ratios have to be right, because a coating failure shows up at the customer's site, not on our floor. Duties Prepare steel and aluminum surfaces for coating, including degreasing, solvent cleaning, hand and power tool cleaning, sanding, and grinding Perform abrasive blasting to the surface profile called out by the coating specification Mask, plug, and protect machined surfaces, nameplates, threaded connections, gaskets, and components that are not to be coated Mix primers, topcoats, and specialty coatings to the correct ratio, viscosity, and pot life per the manufacturer's technical data sheet Apply coatings by airless spray, conventional spray, brush, and roller as the job requires Read and follow coating specifications, manufacturer application instructions, and safety data sheets Verify wet and dry film thickness with gauges and document readings where the job calls for it Monitor ambient conditions, including temperature, humidity, and dew point, and hold off when conditions fall outside the coating window Inspect finished work for runs, sags, holidays, dry spray, and coverage defects, and correct them before the assembly moves forward Touch up assemblies after handling, fit-up, or shipping damage Coordinate with fabricators, welders, fitters, and shop supervision so assemblies enter and leave the coating area on schedule Move and position parts, weldments, and completed assemblies safely using shop material handling equipment Maintain spray guns, hoses, pots, blast equipment, filters, and booth components, and report equipment issues Handle, store, and dispose of paints, solvents, thinners, and waste per shop procedure and regulatory requirements Record labor and material against work orders in Fulcrum on shop tablets Follow all shop safety practices, including PPE, respirator use, ventilation requirements, and safe handling of flammable and hazardous materials Requirements Experience coating steel in a fabrication shop, manufacturing plant, or industrial coating environment Proficiency with airless and conventional spray application, including gun setup, tip selection, and pattern control Working knowledge of industrial coatings, including epoxies, polyurethanes, and zinc-rich primers Ability to read and follow a coating specification and a manufacturer's technical data sheet without being walked through it Surface preparation experience, including abrasive blasting, grinding, sanding, and solvent cleaning Familiarity with SSPC surface preparation standards Ability to use wet and dry film thickness gauges and record accurate readings Strong masking and detail skills, since most of what you coat has components that cannot be painted Ability to inspect your own work and catch defects before the assembly leaves the booth Able to wear a respirator and pass a respirator fit test and medical evaluation Comfortable with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment Forklift certified, or willing to be certified Reliable attendance and the ability to hold a production schedule Preferred NACE or SSPC coatings training or certification Experience coating to customer or project specifications with documented film thickness reporting Powder coating experience
