Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Paint Prep & Spray Technician to join our Finishing Department, supporting the production of high-end luxury retail fixtures and custom millwork. This role is responsible for preparing, sanding, finishing, and spray-applying coatings to wood and composite materials to achieve premium-quality finishes that meet exacting design and brand standards. The ideal candidate takes pride in craftsmanship, understands fine finishing techniques, and thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where quality and precision are essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Surface Preparation Prepare wood and millwork components for finishing through sanding, filling, cleaning, and masking. Sand raw wood, veneer, MDF, and assembled fixtures using hand tools and power sanders. Inspect surfaces for defects including scratches, dents, glue residue, or imperfections prior to finishing. Apply wood fillers, primers, sealers, and base coats as required. Ensure surfaces meet quality standards before moving to spray application. Spray Finishing Apply stains, paints, lacquers, sealers, and specialty coatings using spray equipment. Operate HVLP and conventional spray guns safely and efficiently. Achieve consistent color match, sheen level, and finish quality aligned with project specifications. Maintain clean spray patterns and proper coating thickness. Perform touch-ups and corrections as needed. Quality & Craftsmanship Maintain high-quality standards required for luxury retail environments. Review drawings, finish samples, and specifications to ensure accuracy. Identify finishing issues and proactively correct defects. Maintain consistency across production runs and multiple fixture components. Equipment & Workspace Maintenance Clean and maintain spray equipment, hoses, and booths. Mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer specifications. Monitor material usage and report supply needs. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe finishing workspace.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
2+ years of experience in paint preparation, sanding, or spray finishing preferred. Experience in custom millwork, cabinetry, furniture, or retail fixture manufacturing strongly preferred. Knowledge of wood finishing processes and materials. Ability to read finish schedules, work orders, or shop drawings. Experience with HVLP spray systems preferred. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship. Skills & Competencies Strong sanding and surface preparation techniques Color consistency and finish matching ability Knowledge of coatings, stains, and finishing materials Time management and production awareness Problem-solving mindset Ability to work independently and as part of a team Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Frequent lifting of materials up to 50 lbs. Ability to bend, reach, and work with hand and power tools. Comfortable working in a finishing environment with proper PPE. Work Environment Manufacturing and finishing shop environment. Exposure to paints, stains, and finishing materials (PPE provided). Fast-paced production setting supporting luxury retail installations nationwide.
