Job Description

Controls EngineerPosition Overview We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and troubleshoot building automation and HVAC control systems. The Controls Engineer will lead control system development from design through handover, collaborate with project teams and field technicians, and ensure systems operate efficiently and meet owner requirements. The role emphasizes hands-on programming, field commissioning, and coordination with mechanical and electrical disciplines to deliver robust BAS and PLC-based control solutions.

Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop control strategies and sequences for building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC controls to meet project performance objectives and owner requirements.

Program, configure, and test control system hardware and software including PLCs, DDC controllers, and common BAS platforms; implement ALC and other vendor-specific logic as required.

Prepare and review control system drawings, point lists, sequence of operations, and wiring diagrams; update documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Commission and start up control systems in the field, perform functional testing, troubleshoot issues, and tune control loops to optimize system performance.

Support installation and field technicians by providing technical guidance, reviewing field work, and conducting site inspections to ensure installation quality and adherence to specifications.

Integrate BACnet, Modbus, and other industry communication protocols between
BAS, HVAC
equipment, and third-party systems; validate interoperability and data flows.

Coordinate with project managers, mechanical/electrical engineers, contractors, and owners to resolve design and operational issues and to ensure timely project delivery.

Develop testing procedures, conduct site acceptance tests, and document commissioning results and action items.

Provide training and documentation to owners and maintenance personnel on control system operation, BAS user interfaces, and troubleshooting best practices.

Maintain awareness of code requirements, energy efficiency best practices, and industry standards to ensure compliance and to recommend improvements and upgrades.

QualificationsBachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.3+ years of experience with building automation systems, HVAC controls, and control system programming; experience as a Controls Technician or in a similar field is a plus.

Proven experience programming and commissioning PLCs and DDC controllers; familiarity with common control programming languages (ladder logic, function block, structured text) and vendor toolsets.

Hands-on experience with BAS platforms, ALC controllers, and integration of control systems using BACnet, Modbus, and related protocols.

Strong troubleshooting skills for control systems, HVAC equipment, and field wiring; experience performing loop tuning, functional testing, and fault diagnostics.

Ability to produce and interpret control drawings, point lists, wiring diagrams, and sequence of operations documentation.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills; experience working with multidisciplinary teams and supporting field technicians.

Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to project sites; certifications such as NICET, CEM, LEED, or vendor-specific BAS certifications are advantageous.
