About the Position For 30 years, Fortech, Inc. has provided industrial automation and control solutions for the municipal water and wastewater industry throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. We are seeking an experienced Automation Controls Field Technician with a strong industrial electrical background. This is a hands-on position involving equipment installation, site evaluations, startup, troubleshooting, repair, and service of industrial automation and control systems. Responsibilities Perform field installation of industrial automation, electrical, control, and communications equipment. Install and replace control equipment, field devices, radios, cellular equipment, antennas, cabling, and related hardware. Perform field wiring, terminations, equipment mounting, and site preparation for new installations and system upgrades. Conduct site evaluations and field surveys to document existing equipment, electrical conditions, communications equipment, and other information needed for upcoming work. Assist with startup and commissioning of new and modified control systems. Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel drawings. Troubleshoot electrical and control systems, including control circuits, PLC I/O, VFDs, power supplies, relays, instrumentation, and communications equipment. Perform equipment repairs, replacements, and system upgrades as needed. Work independently and collaboratively with Fortech engineering personnel during installations, startups, and service work. Complete clear and accurate service notes, equipment documentation, and jobsite photographs. Communicate professionally with customers, operators, contractors, and other project personnel. Qualifications Previous experience in industrial field service, electrical controls, automation, industrial maintenance, or a related technical field. Strong hands-on industrial electrical experience and troubleshooting skills. Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Experience using multimeters and other electrical diagnostic equipment. Working knowledge of industrial control components and systems. Experience with field installation, wiring, terminations, and equipment replacement. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform hands-on installation work. Ability to work independently in the field, troubleshoot problems, and recognize when additional technical support is needed. Good communication, organization, and documentation skills. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell or other industrial automation platforms, PLCs, VFDs, industrial communications, instrumentation, or water/wastewater systems is preferred. Water and wastewater experience is highly preferred but not required for a candidate with strong industrial electrical and controls experience. Schedule, Travel & Work Environment This is a full-time position based out of Fortech's Charlotte, NC office . Depending on the day's assignment, technicians may report directly to a customer/job site or to the Charlotte office/shop for project preparation, installation work, service support, training, documentation, or other assigned work. Technicians travel regularly to customer sites within their assigned service region, including water and wastewater facilities, pump stations, tanks, wells, and other locations. Occasional travel outside the assigned region may be required to assist other technicians or support project needs. Work varies from day to day and may include installations, site evaluations, startup, troubleshooting, repairs, system upgrades, and project preparation. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in active industrial and municipal environments. Schedules and daily assignments may vary based on customer needs, project schedules, service calls, travel, and weather conditions. When weather or site conditions affect scheduled field work, technicians will report as directed and may be assigned office/shop, project preparation, documentation, training, or other support work. Early starts, extended days, and occasional overnight travel may be required based on job location and customer needs. The position requires hands-on field work, including the use of hand and power tools, climbing ladders, and lifting and carrying equipment and materials. This position is well suited for someone with an industrial electrical, controls, automation, maintenance, or field service background who enjoys varied work, hands-on projects, and working at different customer locations.
