Job Description
Controls Technician Fulltime direct hire roleDC Baltimore area Base salary plus benefits We are seeking a Field BAS Programmer / Controls Technician who combines strong building automation programming skills with hands-on field experience. This role supports new installations, retrofits, and retro-commissioning projects, while also providing ongoing service to our customers.
This is a hybrid role—ideal for someone who can write and modify control logic, commission systems, and troubleshoot/repair HVAC control components in the field. Key Responsibilities Develop, modify, and deploy BAS/DDC control programs (Niagara 4 preferred) Configure controllers, sequences of operation, alarms, trends, and system graphics Integrate systems using BACnet, Modbus, and other communication protocols Support startup, testing, and validation of system performance Field Service & Troubleshooting Replace and calibrate sensors, actuators, VFDs, and control hardware Perform field modifications to improve system performance and energy efficiency Respond to service calls, including participation in an after-hours on-call rotation Maintain detailed service documentation and communicate findings to internal teams and clients Project Support (Retrofit & Retro-Commissioning) Support implementation of energy conservation measures (ECMs) Assist in developing and executing energy-efficient sequences of operation Install and manage data logging devices for system monitoring and diagnostics Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and subcontractors Assist with scheduling and execution of multiple concurrent projects Customer & Team Collaboration Provide technical guidance to project teams and junior staff Communicate effectively with customers to resolve issues and maintain satisfaction Support continuous improvement of internal processes, standards, and programming practices Qualifications Required 3-7+ years of experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS/DDC) in commercial environments Strong experience with Niagara (Tridium) or similar BAS platforms Proven ability to program, commission, and troubleshoot control systems Working knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, and networked control systems Hands-on experience with HVAC equipment and controls (AHUs, RTUs, VAVs, VFDs, etc.) Strong electrical and controls troubleshooting skills Ability to read and interpret control drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation Valid driver's license and willingness to travel Preferred Niagara 4 Certification (or working toward it) Experience with retro-commissioning and energy efficiency projects Familiarity with multiple BAS platforms (JCI, Siemens, Honeywell, Distech, etc.) Experience with VFD programming and startup Technical degree, military training, or equivalent field experience Work Environment & Schedule Field-based role with travel: 80% local (DC / Baltimore region) 20% remote work Overtime and on-call compensation available
