Controls Technician I Tusco, Inc. | Cottondale, AL Entry-Level Technical Opportunity | Approximately 75% Travel Tusco, Inc. is seeking a motivated Controls Technician I to join our team based in Cottondale, AL. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate of a technical college or associate degree program who is looking to begin a career in controls, automation, electrical systems, or physical security technology. Previous controls experience is not required. We are looking for someone who has built a strong technical foundation through school or hands-on training, has a genuine interest in controls and electrical systems, and is eager to learn and develop their skills in the field. The Controls Technician I works alongside experienced technicians and our Senior PLC Programmer to assist with the installation, wiring, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of physical security control systems on projects throughout the United States. Travel is a significant part of this position. Approximately 75% travel is required, primarily Monday through Friday, with overnight and out-of-state travel. Occasional weekend work may be required based on project needs. When not traveling, this position works from our Cottondale, AL shop assisting with building, wiring, testing, and preparing control systems for upcoming projects. What You'll Learn & Do As a Controls Technician I, you'll work alongside experienced team members while developing your skills in controls, electrical systems, and troubleshooting.
Responsibilities include:
Assist with the installation and wiring of physical security control systems Assist with installation of control panels, PLCs, power supplies, field devices, and related controls equipment Perform low-voltage and limited high-voltage wiring under appropriate direction Learn to read and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and project prints Assist experienced technicians with troubleshooting electrical, wiring, and device-related issues Support system commissioning, functional testing, startup, and debugging activities Work alongside the Senior PLC Programmer and experienced Controls Technicians during system commissioning Learn how PLC hardware, field devices, control panels, and related components work together as part of an integrated system Assist with installation and connection of networked devices and basic communications hardware Develop hands-on experience using multimeters and other electrical test equipment Build, wire, and assemble control panels and systems in our Cottondale shop Assist with staging and functional testing of systems prior to shipment Help identify and correct wiring, assembly, or component issues during testing Accurately document completed work and identified issues Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and work areas Follow company safety standards and all environmental and site-specific requirements Professionally represent Tusco when working at customer and project locations Travel approximately 75% to project sites throughout the United States Perform other related duties as assigned What We're Looking For Associate degree, technical diploma, or certificate from a technical college or accredited training program in a relevant field such as: Mechatronics Industrial Automation Robotics Electrical Technology Electronics Technology Industrial Controls Industrial Maintenance Electromechanical Technology Instrumentation Or another closely related technical field Basic understanding of electrical principles, wiring, and/or controls gained through education or technical training Familiarity with electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, or technical drawings Interest in PLCs, automation, controls, electrical systems, and troubleshooting Basic familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment Strong mechanical and technical aptitude Willingness and ability to learn new systems, equipment, and technologies Ability to follow technical instructions and ask questions when additional direction is needed Dependable, self-motivated, and accountable Strong attention to detail Strong communication and teamwork skills Ability to adapt to changing project priorities, environments, schedules, and weather conditions Ability and willingness to travel overnight and out of state approximately 75% of the time Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) required Ability to safely operate company vehicles Ability to successfully complete required DOT drug screening, physical, and federal/state background screenings Physical Requirements This is an active, hands-on position that includes work in both shop and construction/project-site environments.
