Controls Engineer About Rhino Pumps Rhino Pumps is a full-service industrial pump company headquartered in Pleasant Grove, Utah. We repair, service, and install pumping systems across the Mountain West, serving municipalities, agriculture, mining, and industrial customers. Our in-house capabilities include pump repair and overhaul, custom skid packages under the RhinoSTAK brand, blasting and coatings, UL 508A certified panel builds, and full field installation and commissioning. We are a team of around 50 people who take the work seriously. The Role Our Controls and Electrical shop has been running for about a year. The panel build side is solid — good people, good process, and a foundation that works. The engineering and programming depth is where we are building next, and this role leads that effort. The Controls Engineer owns everything from the design package forward: functional descriptions, BOMs, panel layout drawings, I/O lists, PLC programming, and customer- facing technical scope. You will be the senior controls voice at Rhino Pumps, working alongside project managers, the panel build team, and customers from estimate through commissioning. What You'll Own The design package for every controls job: functional description, BOM, panel layout drawing, and I/O list — completed and reviewed before any build begins PLC and HMI programming — platform experience varies by project; ability to work across manufacturers is expected VFD application and configuration — selection, sizing, and setup per application requirements Panel build review and sign-off — checking builds against drawing, resolving discrepancies, and confirming readiness for FAT Factory acceptance testing: developing FAT procedures, running or overseeing the test, and documenting results Standard controls scope definition: surge protection, line reactors, control power transformer, pressure transducers, HOA on HMI, lead/lag sequencing, runtime meters, fault history, and Modbus RTU with register map for customer integration Customer-facing technical conversations on controls scope during pre-sale and project execution Controls estimates: scoping labor and material accurately, building BOMs from standard configurations, and supporting the estimating process Documentation package delivery: drawings, wiring schematics, register maps, O&M materials, and startup records Department standards: drawing templates, programming conventions, documentation practices, and review processes Supervision and development of controls department personnel What We're Looking For 5+ years of hands-on controls engineering in industrial, municipal, or process pump applications PLC programming experience on at least one major platform (Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Automation Direct, or equivalent); able to adapt across manufacturers VFD application experience across common industrial platforms; able to select, configure, and troubleshoot Working knowledge of UL 508A panel standards and NEC requirements Ability to produce and read electrical drawings: panel layouts, single-lines, wiring schematics, I/O lists Experience scoping controls work, building BOMs, and supporting project estimates Comfortable running customer conversations on controls scope and technical Requirements Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent field experience Nice to Have Background with pump systems, skid packages, or water/wastewater applications Experience with Modbus RTU mapping for third-party integration into customer BAS or SCADA systems Familiarity with UL 508A shop certification processes Field commissioning experience alongside shop-side design work
