Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking an experienced Automation & Controls Field Service Technician to support the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of automation, electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical systems across municipal and industrial water/wastewater facilities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This role is ideal for a hands-on technician with strong field troubleshooting experience in controls, pumping systems, instrumentation, and motor control equipment. The successful candidate will work independently across multiple customer sites, support commissioning activities, and ensure safe, high-quality service delivery. Frequent overnight travel is required. Key ResponsibilitiesAutomation, Controls & Instrumentation Install, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain process instrumentation including: Level transmitters Flow meters Pressure instrumentation Analytical instrumentation Diagnose and repair: Electrical control panels Motor Control Centers (MCCs) Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Motor starters and overload systems Troubleshoot PLC, relay logic, and
SCADA/DCS
systems Read and interpret: Electrical schematics Wiring diagrams P&IDs Control drawings Mechanical & Pumping Systems Service and troubleshoot: Centrifugal pumps Submersible pumps Motors and drives Mechanical seals and associated controls Support startup, commissioning, and performance testing activities Perform preventive maintenance and field diagnostics Independent Field Execution Manage multiple field assignments independently Prioritize service tasks while maintaining safety, quality, and customer commitments Identify equipment deficiencies and recommend corrective actions Escalate advanced programming or integration issues to engineering teams as needed Safety & Compliance Follow
OSHA, NFPA
70E, LOTO, and site-specific safety procedures Maintain safe working conditions in industrial and treatment plant environments Properly utilize PPE and field safety equipment Identify and report unsafe conditions immediately Documentation & Reporting Complete accurate service reports, work orders, commissioning checklists, and calibration records Maintain as-built documentation and field redlines Document troubleshooting findings and corrective actions thoroughly Customer Support Communicate professionally with plant operators, maintenance teams, and project stakeholders Explain technical issues and recommendations clearly Represent the organization professionally during all customer interactions QualificationsEducation High school diploma or equivalent required Associate degree, technical certification, or trade school training in one of the following preferred: Electrical Technology Instrumentation Mechanical Engineering Technology Electromechanical Technology HVAC Plumbing Water Treatment Related technical field Experience 4-6 years of hands-on field service experience in: Water/wastewater systems Pumping systems HVAC/mechanical systems Industrial controls or related environments Experience troubleshooting: Pumps and motors Motor controls VFDs Mechanical/electrical systems Startup and commissioning experience preferred Prior exposure to municipal or industrial treatment facilities strongly preferred Technical Skills Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting capabilities Working knowledge of: PLC systems
SCADA/DCS
platforms Instrumentation systems VFDs and motor controls Ability to read technical drawings and schematics Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and confined space procedures Proficiency using computers/mobile devices for field reporting and documentation Valid driver's license with clean driving record Core Competencies Independent problem-solving Strong communication skills Professional customer interaction Safety-focused mindset Time management and organization Technical documentation accuracy Team collaboration and knowledge sharing Physical Requirements & Work Environment Ability to lift up to 75 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally Ability to work in: Confined spaces Elevated areas Industrial environments Outdoor weather conditions Frequent standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, and walking Exposure to: Electrical hazards Mechanical equipment Water/wastewater treatment environments High-noise areas Schedule & Travel Full-time position Standard 40-hour work week Occasional after-hours and weekend emergency response Daily regional travel with overnight travel as needed
