Job Description
Job Summary The Controls Technician is responsible for installing, wiring, commissioning, and troubleshooting HVAC control systems in new construction and retrofit environments. This role requires strong technical expertise in building automation systems, the ability to lead installation activities, and close coordination with project teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure successful system delivery. Key Responsibilities Install, wire, and terminate controllers and field devices, including low‑voltage cabling. Coordinate and execute the installation of HVAC control systems on construction and retrofit projects. Plan and manage site activities, including materials, logistics, inventory, tool storage, and site access/security. Lead installation teams through daily and weekly planning meetings. Support and execute change orders and additional service scope as required. Perform panel and system cutovers for retrofit projects with minimal operational disruption. Develop and implement Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for site activities and system transitions. Support proposal development through input on RFIs, estimating, and takeoffs. Perform commissioning‑focused design reviews and prepare commissioning test procedures and reports. Coordinate and oversee system startup, testing, commissioning, and closeout activities. Assist software leads with pre‑functional and functional testing. Troubleshoot control systems, implement corrective actions, and verify proper operation. Analyze system performance to confirm compliance with the contracted scope of work. Perform QA/QC inspections using software tools and provide installation inspections for customer acceptance. Mark up shop drawings to document as‑built conditions. Communicate regularly with project managers, subcontractors, clients, and commissioning agents. Track issues, document out‑of‑scope work, and support project closeout documentation. Attend project bid walks, engineering surveys, audits, and commissioning meetings. Conduct peer QA/QC reviews for projects engineered by others. Improve workflow and deliverables through development of templates, standards, and automation tools. Work independently with minimal supervision on assigned projects. Required Skills & Experience Strong knowledge of HVAC control systems and building automation systems (BAS/BMS) . Proficiency in Niagara AX , controls troubleshooting, and automation platforms. Experience with electrical and control system installation and commissioning. 3-8+ years of experience in controls or building automation systems. Knowledge of equipment manufacturer specifications and control sequences. Niagara AX Certification or equivalent experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience with JCI/Metasys, Siemens, Honeywell, and Automated Logic systems. PLC and ALC experience. Experience supporting critical HVAC equipment, including chillers, air handlers, CRAC/CRAH units, and boilers . Work Environment Primarily field‑based in construction and retrofit environments , including active mechanical rooms and job sites. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
